New cot mattress for occasional use at grandparents?

Our 6 month old little boy is going to spend the weekend with his grandparents while my sister gets married. His granny has got him a cot from a friend. I'm not sure whether we need to get a new mattress for it (I know it's recommended that you get one for each new baby). I would do like a shot if he was going to be there for longer than a couple of days here and there but I'm not sure what to do in this situation. i'd be really interested to hear what other people think.... I also don't want to offend her. help!!!

If it was me I wouldn't bother . Its only for a few days and Im sure grandma has made sure cot & matrress is OK. I knnow hat they say about a new matress for each baby, my two slept on same cot matress. It was always covered in two sheets etc etc.

Im sure with nice clean beding it will be OK, send some bedding along with him.

If the old mattress is really stained and disgusting I would get a new one. If it is reasonable I wouldn't. You can get mattress covers for cot matresses I think.

Does your normal matress have a zip off cover you could use to cover it if you are worried? You can buy these from Mothercare.

i thought that the new mattress for each child was more to with the mattress sagging moulding to childs shapee thasn it being dirty. I think it depends how much this mattress has been used, daily or occassionally by one child or more. but as it is only advised that for the first six months the baby sleeps in the same room as mother i assume that the risk of cot death has decreased so it probably isnt as much of a concern as if he were smaller.

the fact that he is now 6 months would probably mean I wouldn't bother
