DS chokes and sometimes takes a while start breathing again. As a result I'm totally paranoid that he'll choke in his sleep (he has done twice now) and stop breathing so I'm looking for a monitor that would sound if this happened. Are they any good? Worth the price for peace of mind? Do they actually work?

Angel one works for little babes but can get twitchy as they get older and start moving about the bed more. I found it totally worth the expense and odd false alarm. I also had a camera set up so i could check without going through. Both helped me sleep better. You can probably buy second hand for a reasonable price.

BarberryRicePud · 22/01/2014 06:20

How old is he?
If he's stopping breathing for more than 10 seconds (or is not a young baby) please go and see your doctor. Getting a movement sensor is no substitute for getting it sorted.

We have the angel care and find it very reassuring if that helps

Thank you.

Barberry thanks for the advice, obviously the GP was my first port of call but they have no idea what's wrong. I'm doing my best.

We have really liked having the Angelcare monitor for dd2 and have only had the occasional false alarm when she became old enough to move about the cot and wedge herself up in a corner. There was a scare recently about two babies in Canada I think, who died after they pulled the wire into the cot and managed to strangle themselves with it. I believe the Angelcare was recalled over there and a wire protector issued to customers. It hasn't been recalled in Europe as they say that if set up correctly according to the instructions then that can't happen. We have it set up as they advised, with the wire wrapped tightly around the cot leg and secured, and the Angel unit at least 2m from the cot, and I cannot see how she could possibly pull the wire in - I can't, and at 15mo she isn't stronger than I am! I think that would be an issue with any monitor with a sensor pad, as they will all have wires. But I am happy with the safety of our Angelcare and would recommend it.

I had a monitor with the sensor pad attached for all 3. They all had reflux so they did the choking thing too. I slept them on their tummies too to ease reflux and choking so the monitor was for peace of mind.

The point is, the light will flash with every breath so you are not disturbing him every 5 minutes or scared to sleep yourself. Id flick open my eyes and see the green light flash with their every breath. Also I could sit in my livingroom at night relaxed because I could see his every breath.

My monitor was Tomee Tipee.

I advise the monitor because you need more confidence and less anxiety under the circumstances.

If you want, the GP can send you to a class to learn how to resuscitate a baby. I went to one when my first stopped breathing. Thankfully we had the monitor and it went off.
He was extremely pale and still even after shaking him. We picked him up and automatically started rubbing him and he came to. He may or may not have been about to stop breathing all together, it may have been an episode brought on by his reflux but thank god I had the alarm for that moment and also so I could relax after that, not just with him but with his little sister and brother after him.

princesspants · 22/01/2014 10:32

I should add, my first didn't sleep on his tummy as I had no idea he had reflux. Just incase someone thinks that caused it!

Thanks for the advice but I've done all that. He's 8 weeks. He usually sleeps in our bed - if not, his moses basket next to it. I've been to the GP (5 times) and A&E (twice), I've done the child's first aid course and I'm now looking into the movement monitor - what else am I supposed to do? I'm actually quite offended that you think I haven't done that already.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll look into them.

We used the angelcare monitor with both our boys. Never had a problem with false alarms.

I used it first time until ds was around 2 years old and went into a bed. We bought the newer model for Ds2 who is now 20 months and plan to continue using until he goes into a bed.

KongKickeroo · 22/01/2014 11:54

I'm sorry I offended you, I really didn't mean to. You're right, you've done all you can. I've asked for my post to be removed. I hope everything gets sorted out for your DS soon.

Echocave · 22/01/2014 12:39

Angelcare is good. Only false alarm we ever had was after dd turned 8 months and was basically crawling round the cot(!). The sensor pad is quite small for a cot bed so very active bigger babies will move off it.
But I like the fact that the monitor unit has a little pendulum on it so you can see the movement light is flashing on the base set. Very reassuring. Best of luck with everything, it sounds very scary for you.

Ellypoo · 22/01/2014 15:23

I have the tommee tippee one with the video monitor - I never used the movement mat that came with it, but having the camera monitor is fantastic - DD is a really still quiet sleeper, so having the camera has been a godsend.

I hope you find one you are happy with, and that your baby either is helped by GP/hospital or grows out of whatever is causing this - it must be terrifying for you.

Jackanory1978 · 22/01/2014 15:32

We have the angelcare & we're very happy with it. I really can't see how he'd pull the wires into the cot, they're wrapped around the cot leg, & the only false alarms are when I pick him up out of the cot & forget to put the alarm on hold.

He's a very active 9 month old but the pad detects his movement in all corners of the cot, & we haven't had the problem that others have had of the sensor not covering the whole cot.

AndWhat · 22/01/2014 16:11

We've got this one www.amazon.co.uk/Angelcare-AC1100-Video-Movement-Monitor/dp/B004E9SWQ2/ref=sr_1_29?s=baby&ie=UTF8&qid=1390405862&sr=1-29 and when i joined amazon family i got vouchers so it only cost £100 instead of £250 and we've only had 2 false alarms where baby has moved up his cot and off the mat. I watch him through the monitor and can see him breathing and wriggling round and have the sound on which has given us great reassurance and I'm not constantly checking in on him
