Can you use a carry cot as a Moses basket?

I'm curious. I've posted this in pregnancy too but basically I wanted to get DD a Moses basket to have in our room as the cot is in her nursery (it's also too big to fit in our room.. or our room is too small.)

Has anyone used a carry cot for nighttime sleeping?

DH doesn't see the point in us buying a Moses basket for her.

We did because DS hated his crib that we bought him and would settle ok in the carry cot. I don't suppose there is much difference between the two, and they are in them for such a short amount of time before they grow out of them and need to move to a cot.

However if we were to have another DC I would probably want to buy a Moses basket just for the convenience of being able to carry it up and downstairs and not have to move the whole pram chassis too.

Aren't they the same thing just that one is made from baskety stuff?

Moses baskets are no good after the first couple of months. I wouldn't bother

We used the top of the pram, is this what you mean?
It was fine and a step up from the bottom drawer we started off with.
They'll sleep in ewt, they're babies.

Yes, that is exactly what we did for 3 months before we moved DD into her cot in her room.

Yes we did. Fitted on a Moses basket stand too.

You do have to check that it has ventilation holes in the sides or bottom I think.

We did this with the carry cot from the pram. We had a Moses basket but DS just didn't like it! Also, the carrycot was more narrow so I would put it on the side of the bed which was next to the wall, meaning he could sleep in the bed with us safely in his own carrycot which was easier when he woke for a feed.

Please check the manufacturers recommendations. Some carry cots are not designed to be slept in regularly as they may not have sufficient ventilation and also some of the mattresses can be quite uncomfortable.

We used a bassinet for the first 3 months then moved DS into his cot. Can you borrow a Moses basket from anyone? If you are able to you can also hire bednests etc too if you are worried about unnecessary storage.

We used the carry cot, was suitable for overnight sleeping, also we bought the special padded sheets that were made for it. Bought a stand as well (which was more expensive than a moses basket but was handy for popping the car seat onto later on).

Yes you can. I bought the uppababy vista for this exact reason. The carrycot is suitable for overnight use and has velcro ventilation flaps under the mattress. DD now 9 months used it for about 4 months before she outgrew it and she is a very long baby. Meant that if she fell asleep whilst out and about I didn't have to move her. Likewise if she was asleep and I needed to go out it was not a problem as I could just put it on the wheels and head out.

Of course now she likes the motion of the buggy to help her get to sleep at nap time. It's getting to be a hassle, but you didn't ask about that!

Good luck with whatever you decide. It's a very short phase.

Yes. We bought a basket stand and a mattress for it to make it softer for ds. He lasted 4 months in it.

Alexchallex · 21/01/2014 10:34

Yes especially when we went away on hols.
They'll probably grow out of both Moses and carry cot by 3 to 4 months
