Wwyd for 19month ds behaviour

We have a 19 month old ds. He keeps on being naughty and when we say no or take him away he goes back to it but watches us all the time waiting for a reaction. I know he's young but we've had to buy a new telly as he's managed to break the last one by hitting it repeatedly with the remote so it bled inside. He's now started doing it to this one. We're waiting on brackets to come so we can put it on the wall.

Is he too young for the naughty step? Or is this just an (expensive!) phase?

Say no, firmly and then distract, distract, distract. You just need to be vigilant.

Put the TV in a playpen or travel cot.

Playpen!

I'm not being flippant but take the remote off him. And anything else that could be used as a weapon.

Yes he is too young for the naughty step (not a fan anyway).

Put the remote-and anything else dangerous/unsuitable-out of his reach and keep him occupied and in your sight. He's still a baby and learning so many new things but a firm 'no' and then removal from the scene of the crime should start to give him the message.

It's just a game to him, not naughtiness.

Sorry, should have said we take the remote off him but he just goes and picks up whatever he can get his hands on. Like a book or one of his cars. Would a playpen work for his age? I'd have thought he'd be too old but don't know much about them.

I guess it'll be the taking away and distraction! It's like the terrible 2's have come early! Thanks for all the advice.

I had to resort to using the naughty step when my ds was around that age for similar reasons, also hitting, kicking etc. for him it worked, and if I'm honest it also gave me the time and space to cool down.

I couldn't imagine putting my other dc on the naughty step at that age, but ds really did need it and having tried various other options it really was the only thing that worked for him.
