Am I the worst mother in the world?

I sent 5 year old DD to school for 2 days with a broken collarbone and told her teacher "she's hurt her shoulder". In retrospect, a sling may have been a good option...

Ahhh bugger. That'd take some topping!

My lovely mother made my drunken father climb two flights of stairs with a broken spine after he fell from the roof (she had assumed he fell off the kerb) outs self

Hope your DD is ok, at least you know she is as strong as an ox to have managed a few days of it un-diagnosed.

Can't help but wonder what your dad was doing on the roof!

Hope your dd feels better soon

Combination of too much booze (free bar, works party) and shinning up the drainpipe as he clearly thought he was superman it was quicker than the stairs. Of only he had remembered it had been swapped from cast iron to plastic...

«disclaimer» this was 21 years ago and thanks to amazing work by the surgeons he can walk.

whatsagoodusername · 18/01/2014 22:38

My mother made my sister walk for three days on a broken ankle until it swelled up twice its size.

BermudaMum · 18/01/2014 22:41

Actually, the doc told me that it was "one of the best bones to break". Who knew there was a hierarchy of bone breaking?

OP posts:
Pimpf · 18/01/2014 22:41

I thought my dropping a flat pack on my 4 month old daughters head was bad.....

.... Oh hang on, it was!

Pimpf · 18/01/2014 22:42

Dh's parents put frozen peas on his ankle and sent him to bed after he'd hurt it in the park. Next day had to take him to a&e for a broken ankle!

Pimpf · 18/01/2014 22:42

Username, that beats dh's

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 18/01/2014 22:43

My cousin fell off a bed as a child, broke her collarbone. Nobody noticed at the time, they then went on a week-long RIDING holiday Shock and it was only when they got back they took her to the doctor because she was still complaining of pain. Poor kid!

Rudy?? There must be more to the story of the 9 year old!

hippo123 · 18/01/2014 23:16

My mum made my brother play in a violin concert with a broken hand. Obviously she didn't realise at the time!

lola88 · 19/01/2014 15:53

I went 2 days with a cast up to my elbow for a broken wrist telling my mum my arm still really hurt before she gave in and took me back for another x-ray showing a break further up... I've never let her forget it Grin

clam · 19/01/2014 16:09

Yup, can I join the 'bad mother' club too? Dcs bouncing on my bed on Christmas Day and dd fell off, hitting her elbow. 3 days later, when she was still complaining about it, we went to A & E. Sure enough... broken. The nurse asked her how long it had been hurting. We got a Shock look. Blush Fortunately dd didn't tell her that everyone was far too pissed to have driven her there on CD anyway.

minesapintofwine · 19/01/2014 17:22

I've broken my arm twice. The first time my teacher made me P.E, the second time dh let me drive myself to a and e (I did underplay it). Dh was Blush but the teacher felt no guilt. So you shouldn't either op happens all the time looking at these posts. Also despite my own sob story if the injured party isn't rolling around on the floor screaming in agony with the limb bent in the opposite direction/jagged bone poking out, then I doubt Id suspect a break. I haven't time for pointless visits to a and e

mummyxtwo · 20/01/2014 09:48

I'm a GP and have met a number of nurses and doctors who have sent their child to school with a "don't fuss, you'll be fine!" only to discover a few days later that their ankle / wrist has a fracture. You're certainly not alone!!

HandragsNGladbags · 20/01/2014 09:51

My DM sent me to school with a badly broken elbow. I was a complete whinge as a child so she didn't realise how bad it was, and uttered the immortal phrase "if it isn't broken when we get there it will be when we get out" Grin.

She is a very caring mum so was beside herself when she saw the xray

MrsDavidBowie · 20/01/2014 09:52

Oh I did that when D's broke his collarbone.
Took me 2 days to take him to casualty....he was 2.
He broke it twice more in later years. There 's nothing they can do anyway.

I broke my arm when I was 7 and my parents didn't notice for a week.
Neglect runs in our family [grin ]

prettybird · 20/01/2014 09:58

Ds broke his collarbone 2 weeks before Christmas at after-school rugby. The depute head thought it was just a bump Grin.

The orthopod said that sometimes people never even realise that it's broken and only find out many years later when they have an X-ray for a different reason and see the fused bone.

It is the best bone to break as it needs minimal support for two+ weeks (orthopod said it's a "common sense" injury as it will tell you how long you need to wear the sling) and normally heals really well.

If it's a greenstick fracture (probable given it's a child's bone and the fact that it wasn't immediately obvious) then once it's healed, it'll be stronger than the surrounding bone (according to my dad, a retired paediatric radiologist) Grin

Gerty1002 · 20/01/2014 10:53

My mother kept calling me a hypochondriac and telling me 'You WILL go to school' when I had fractured my elbow. By the time it was diagnosed there was a piece of bone floating around in there :).

TheNightIsDark · 20/01/2014 10:56

I drove 20 miles the other day before I realised 4 month old DS was strapped into his seat but the seat wasn't strapped in the car. Luckily dd caught him as we went round a roundabout.

Also made DD go around with a dislocated elbow for 2 days before I realised that the nurse hadn't fixed it properly Hmm

BitOutOfPractice · 20/01/2014 10:59

My mom sent me to school with appendicitis

And I ran over my own child's foot

Neither my mother or I have been allowed to forget either incident!

Hope she's OK OP. I'm sure she is

givemeaclue · 20/01/2014 11:01

I know they take a dim view on it at the hospital if you don't seek medical attention for a child at the time of the accident but leave it till a later date, but I can't remember what they write it down as

My mum sent my diss to school with a sore tummy...turned out to be hepatitis.
