Would you give a toddler curry?

I have a 16 month old DD and I wanted to know if it is ok to start giving her very mild curry?

I just don't want her to get an upset tummy.

Both mine had curry from a young age. The youngest is 14 months and her favourite meal is chilli. I usually add a little soured cream if I have made it spicy, but she loves it and curry.

Curried okra was one of DS2's first meals at six months - giving them a wide range of seasonings and flavours early doors is great. I don't put any chillies in them, but DS1 has always liked strong flavours (e.g. pickled onions, sweet chilli ricecakes) and he loves curried soup now (aged 4).

I am Indian and DS loves his 'Western' food like pasta, pies, quiches but will happily gobble whatever curry we are having. Normally rice, dal, a veg curry or two and then some chicken or egg. All finished off with yoghurt rice. Pretty much what he would eat if he was growing up in India rather than the UK.

DS1 (now 19 months) loves a good curry or chilli. He was eating horseradish sauce at 7 months (with roast beef - not just out of the jar!) and loves hot food; couple of weeks ago was tucking enthusiastically into a thai red curry that was making a friend of ours sweat Grin.

roweeena · 19/01/2014 13:02

Of course! The first meat my son are was a lamb curry

jimijack · 19/01/2014 13:08

Are you not supposed to?
My 10 month old regularly eats it with us....he is fine, no upset tummies here..
Gobbles it up in fact.

Mine have all had curry and spicy foods from weaning onwards... Even my uber picky dd eats it. If it's too spicy just mix it with rice to soften the taste.

She'll be fine, it's food for them to get used to lots of different tastes

frugalfuzzpig · 19/01/2014 13:48

I used to but they don't like anything spicy anymore :(

They are 4/6 and I'm finally starting to get them into helping me cook so I might try a mild curry type thing from scratch (have been using sauce from jars for far too long!) maybe a mild Thai or coronation chicken type thing.

One thing I really love (my DCs don't but more adventurous ones might!) is canned chick peas heated in a little oil, with a spoon of curry paste stirred through. Mash with a fork and add a little water to make it smooth. It's fab as a dip for veggie sticks/pitta.

Yes! Dd2 is nearly 15mo and has enjoyed mild curries for a couple of months now. She loves fruity chicken curry with dried apricots in, a mild korma, and chicken and broccoli curry. She prefers dishes with flavour so definitely worth trying with your lo.

docpeppa · 20/01/2014 22:57

Thanks everyone, feel silly now for not trying her sooner! Haha!

She had a bit of my curry tonight but pulled a face, so think it could have been a bit too spicy.

I'll try her again tomorrow with some yoghurt in it.

7mo ds had very mild homemade curry tonight and seemed to enjoy it.

TinyDiamond · 20/01/2014 23:17

dd was weaned on it. To be fair, she is half Indian.

ZingSweetApple · 20/01/2014 23:46

I would not give full meal as I get stomach cramps and indegistion (can be quite painful) so would worry they react the same way, but would let them try a few bites and if no reaction I'd be ok.

because of above reasons I hardly ever eat a curry and never cook it - but DH does so kids have tried it a few times and some of them like the milder dishes

but if you want to and have no reason to worry about idigestion or whatever then why not?

McPheezingMyButtOff · 20/01/2014 23:49

Dd had Korma tonight, but hated it.

Fantail · 21/01/2014 06:54

DD loves fragrant, rather than spicy curry - so cumin, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon etc. in fact, turmeric is meant to be very good for the digestion.

I cook a lot of middle eastern foods and DD likes those meals.

MadMonkeys · 21/01/2014 10:21

My DD was fine in the tummy department but had awful nappy rash after having a very mild curry. I guess you have to try it and see.

OldBeanbagz · 21/01/2014 10:36

My DC have had curry since they were weaned and i've gradually built up the spiciness. They're now 12 & 9 and eating the same strength curries as me & DH.

Last night we had chilli which DH thought was a little bit hotter than normal but which the DC ate with no complaint Grin

TwelveLeggedWalk · 21/01/2014 12:59

WEll t hat jinxed it.

MAde a chicken and mango curry at the weekend. Ate it with them. Both refused to even taste a mouthful.

drspouse · 21/01/2014 13:35

We give DS (just 2) leftover curry but only 50/50 with full fat yoghurt - and I just made some with Sainsbury's korma paste and he didn't have any yoghurt adjustment and he liked it, we added some chili and lime chutney.

I'm planning also to build up the spiciness. I've done the same with chilli.
