I have a play mat for my little boy which to be fair he hasn't been on yet but all he does it have cuddles, play with mummy and daddy on knee, sit in his chair or his battery powered swing which he loves. What baby toys can I buy him which he can (not play with) but enjoy?

My dd is only just starting to show an interest in toys now at nearly 12 weeks. She has loads but is currently loving a little cuddly elephant that has scrunching ears and a plastic hook. And a dingly dangly on her pram.

Other than that she has no interest yet.

Mine enjoyed a sassy rattle. She might enjoy just watching you move it around. Also try a black and white picture book.

Lameze are good but she might be a bit young.

I'd definitely recommend getting some sassy links (rattle and links can both be bought from Amazon or John Lewis). We hang the links from her jungle gym with various toys attached - we can change it all the time to keep her occupied.

Mine is now 5 months and her favourite toys have been links and plastic stacking cups.

Thanks for the replies, I'm a first time mum by the way so haven't a clue for toys and development ect. I have loads of teddies for him but he can't grab or anything yet which is why I haven't tried I'll have a go with the teddies Smile

My DD loved the Lamaze toys, and holdable shapes like a Sqwish, a Winkel (Manhattan Toy Co.) or an Oball - great for grasping and passing from hand to hand. She also liked to knock down towers of stacking cups from quite early on.

I bought these for my dd and she still loves them at nearly a year old. They look lovely too on a shelf

A mirror. Our play mat has a big plastic mirror in one corner hooked onto one of the arches. At five weeks old DS loved nothing more than to be put on his play mat facing the mirror, and he would lie there for ages staring at himself.

Don't bother buying loads, seriously they don't care. My DD is now 8 months old and we trot the same things out every day, she's just as pleased. Her most favourite 'toy' is straps or the tags/labels on items! I got given a thing called a taggie - I think that's what it's called. It is essentially a square piece of fleecy material with small loops of different ribbons all around the edges. She can happily sit for a good while transfixed by it. So simple.

i think i was similar when my ds was small, it was a while until he reached same level of enthusiasm for toys as me!! now your ds probably has most fun looking at you, generally enjoying light and dark and contrast between black and white, you can get black and white fabric books. i found around 2/3 m he likes things that reflect light, mirrors, things to watch, (there might be mirror toy on your playmat?
i found nice soft box toy which had little bell in it from early learning centre which ds loved and i was totally unafraid of him bumping his head on, whereas a lot of wooden or plastic toys until they really have 'grasping' sorted seem to always be bumping into heads!
i would recommend you have a look at galt toys, they do a fabric animal skittles set which we have used over and over and as he gets older he plays with them differently, at 2.6m he is still not fully understanding the rules of skittles (they have bells in and are good for shaking!) also galt toys are usually machine washable which you will begin to Appreciate when everything gets chewed and then dropped onto the floor of slightly dusty cafe! i don't think lamaze or Manhattan toys are machine washable (they say wipe clean) which when they are properly filthy isn't really enough, although i machine washed almost everything and i have only ruined a couple of things!
not sure where you live but worth asking at your local surestart centre if they have toy library, west Sussex centres are excellent.

other thing worth googling now and preparing for when ds sits up is treasure baskets, my ds happily spent hours putting a pine cone in a paper cup when he was around a year old!

My two youngest loved the mobile in this pack even though there's nothing to it and still love the books here

DD is nearly 13 weeks and we're only just starting to "get" toys. It's tricky until they find their hands.

The play mat is the best thing for now. The random waving or arms and kicking legs will knock things and keep him busy. Movements will become more purposeful in the next few weeks.

Over the next few weeks things he can hold will be good. This is our current favourite: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B005RVCA0U/ref=mp_s_a_1_9?qid=1389965985&sr=8-9&pi=AC_SX110_SY165 (only £3.99 in Mothercare!)

Lamaze toys are great, apparently Jacques the Firefly is a good one. DD likes Mittens the Kitten.
