Experienced Potty Trainers I desperately need your advice

I am in week 6 of training DS (2.9).
Brief history of the training: -

Days 1-5 - nightmare/lots of accidents but to be expected.

Day 6 - Got it. No accidents

Was great then for about 2 weeks with barely an accident and totally using the potty on his own initiation etc. Then we started playschool (don't know if this affected things) but he started to have accidents in the afternoons at home every day for 3 weeks. Playschool has finished now until the beginning of Sept.

The last week has been awful. Every time we are out he has at least 1 accident. In stores etc. Really difficult to deal with but he doesn't seem bothered by it. I then spend the afternoon cleaning up accidents all over the house.

He never initiates needing a wee/poo anymore even though at day 6 he was going to the potty on his own and knew exactly what to do.

I am soooo close to putting him back into nappies but feel I have come so far it would be a shame.

Has anyone else been through a similar situation? Did you go back to nappies and for how long before you tried again?

I need to try have him trained for Sept.

Hello Reece
Sounds to me like playschool has a lot to do with it - were they asking him to go or putting him on or letting him initiate it? Just wondering..... Or otherwise, bit 'cod psychology' this but do you think he's been happy at playschool or was he a bit upset about going to start with? Not been through it myself but since no-one else answering ........ They are manipulative though. My ds wees in his pants if I try to get him to sleep at lunchtimes now and then says 'mummy I've done a wee on purpose feel somewhere between and when he does that.....

I agree with malory; try to have a quiet few days with lots of focussing on him, to try and get to where you were before, even if this means backtracking a bit and offering more help with initiating toilet trips, pulling up pants etc. The Playschool sounds like it was a bit of an interruption for him. Maybe he was just a bit overwhelmed ?

shinypeople · 28/07/2006 14:24

sorry to be blonde but what is COD?

Reece · 28/07/2006 18:14

Thanks all. I do think playschool has played a part in it. However for the first week there he was really upset about me leaving him yet still had the same clothes on when I collected him so no accidents. They told me he was telling them when he wanted to go but I'm not entirely sure if this was the case every time. It seemed fine though and I was really pleased. Maybe it was once it had sunk in that I was always going to be taking him to playschool that he started to wet himself again. I don't know. All I do know is that we are back to square one after all this time and I am finiding it really difficult to stay calm.

I will take your advice and stay in a bit over the weekend and try to be more relaxed etc but its not going to be easy. What is with toddlers eh?!

Still haven't heard from anyone that has trained and gone back to nappies following regression. Anyone out there?????

OP posts:
colditz · 28/07/2006 23:26

I tried to train ds1 over and over again, but he was not gettng i6t.

Talk to the playschool, it could be that they don't know what they are supposed to be doing with him, he is wetting and it's not helping to keep him trained, IYSWIM

I did put ds1 back into nappies when we left the house after he pooed on the opticiabn's floor, but kept him bare-bummed at home. 3 weeks later he is clean and dry, day and night, so it worked for me.,

Reece · 29/07/2006 10:36

Colditz how old was your DS?
That must have been v.embarressing at the opticians. Poor you and DS.
My DS has not poo'd anywhere embarressing yet but I'm sure it will happen. He has wee'd in los of stores, including m & S in the furniture department. I just thanked my lucky stars that he wasn't sitting on a sofa!!!This training really could end up an expensive experience.

DS was having a tantrum this morning and hit DH. He was sent up to his room with the door closed but kept coming out. Refused to apologise and then pee'd al up his bedroom door and on the carpet!
After he had calmed down he said sorry.

Reece Yep see what I mean! Don't give up - keep going, he will get the message eventually. I think you need to have a sit down with the playgroup teachers when he starts again.
NB For those interested - Didn't mean Lady Cod in my previous post was referring to an expression that sort of means psychology but without scientific evidence

Reece · 30/07/2006 15:21

DS has been graeat this weekend. No accidents yesterday except for the poo.
Today has been great as well and we have been out and about a bit to. He has actually told me twice that he wanted a wee but when he tried nothing happened. I was just thrilled he had told me. Thats an achievement in itself!

Hasn't been toilet in ages though and no poo as yet so we will see what happens. God bless him.

Reece Just keeping an eye on you! Sounds like progress.......my ds only just started to crack poo - we started potty training mid June and we've had a few in the right place in the last few days so fingers crossed. He definitely holds them in or was doing - they do seem to get freaked out by doing poos in the potty. So if your ds sorts wee first again don't be surprised, think it is pretty common for poo to take longer anyway.

Reece · 30/07/2006 22:08

Thanks petitfilou. You are very good to be thinking of us
Yes this weekend has been great. Only the 1 poo accident yesterday and a no show day for poo today. All wee's in potty and even used travel potty to. It's always at this point though, when you think you are getting back on track, that suddenly things can change again so please keep posting to keep me sane and let me know how you are all getting on.
I will be so pleased if he ges the wee's cracked. I can live with the poo in pants for now. At least its normally only once a day compared to lots and lots of large puddles on the floor.

good luck reece keep at it - have trained four and would say dont put him back in nappies he will make progress however slow! glad to hear its slightly better!

Reece · 30/07/2006 22:17

Thanks NotanOtter. I will keep trying.
I just have to keep reminding myself that DS is still just a little boy trying to make a huge adjustment in his life.

Hello Reece. Been too busy to post for a bit and also trying to forget the dreaded potty. But back to see how it's going. Sorry to hear it's still much the same - and still no joy here too.

Not doing too bad with wees (although doesn't go unless I say he has to still) but still refusing to poo on the potty. After reading some of the other threads on constipation I've decided to just back off on this one in case it becomes a big issue (although probably too late....)
I've dropped the sticker chart and we're using pull-ups when we go somewhere that'd I'd be stressed if he wee'd and trying to just leave it to him.
Hoping that one day he'll just decide it's time!
Good luck!

Reece · 31/07/2006 18:53

Hi rosieglow. Good to hear from you again.
Ds has been great today. he actually used the potty all on his own and has also used it for wees when I have asked him.
We have been out to do the weekly tesco shop and he stayed dry thank goodness. I have been pretty nervous about accidents since last week when he was weeing everywhere we went.
I seem to have just placed the worry into the back of my mind for the mo.
No poo yesterday or so far today. This is not normal for him but I suspect I know where it will land!!!!!

Reece · 01/08/2006 20:18

How is everyone doing? Any progress?
Ds's poo arrived. He told me it was coming and we ran to the potty and just made it in time

I was sooo proud of him and I made a big fuss over how pleased I was and what a clever boy he was etc etc. He also got a special treat of a chocolate coin and was happy with that.

Has had 2 wee accidents at home. Definately due to tiredness. There was another 1 (the first) at a playcentre but to be fair he was having so much fun he wasn't thinking about his water works! When we realised what had happened he happily came to sit on the travel potty to see if there was more to come.

Rosieglow · 02/08/2006 20:57

DS had one wee in the garden, a couple in the potty and then just before bedtime he obviously needed to go but refused. I tried to carry him to the toilet but he just refused to sit on it so I put a nappy on him and made him go straight to bed. Couldn't think what else to do.
Now enjoying big glass of wine (me, not him obviously!)

Reece · 03/08/2006 09:13

Did you enjoy the wine Rosieglow?

DS wasn't bad yesterday but did a wee before bedtime with his clothes on all over the floor in front of DH and I. Seemed to be proud that he had done it as well! Not funny.

Have to go get pull-up off now this morning and see what lies in store for the rest of the day!

OP posts:
Reece · 03/08/2006 16:13

No wee accidents so far today The poo arrived though and DS in fairness tried to get to the toilet on his own but only made it to the door. Another pair of dirty pants for mummy to deal with Going to venture out now so keeping my fingers crossed no wee's on the shop floor!

OP posts:
Rosieglow · 03/08/2006 20:27

Had a great day today! I left DS in pullups all day & he didn't wee in them once! And he even said he needed a wee when we were in a shop and then held on to it all the time it took to pay and then find some toilets! That's the first time he's said when he wanted a wee for about 6 weeks and he wasn't even in pants!!

Ok, so we didn't have any poos today but still....
