This may be the wrong board for my questions but no ones ever on the multicultural family's board and I'm not sure where else to put this!

My daughter is 6 months old and mixed race (white British and Nigerian). She has soft curls on top of her head and a very rough almost afro tuft at the back.

Currently I try not to shampoo her hair too often and put some oil in it after her bath. I'm just wondering if what I'm doing is right and if there's anything else I should be doing / products I should be using.

I'm quite worried about the rough hair at the back as it often gets bits of fluff knotted up in it (its about an inch long) and is always really dry, even when I've put oil on it.

Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks :)

It's a never ending quest in my opinion. Grin I have just been watching 'mahogony curls' on YouTube. She has a YouTube channel with a lot of videos about hair.

I have two dds and although the I hair looks ypthe same to anyone, it's not the same and I have to do different things to it and use different products.

I don't use shampoo on either of them. I use a plant spray with water and I also use a Mason Pearson brush. You can get similar brushes in tkmaxx that are boar and bristle but I don't know what they are like. I've got a tangle teeze too but I do t think it's that good.

For one of my dds we do t brush it dry at all. Just when it's been conditioned. Then it's just curly and I just style the curls in the morning. Like put them in a ponytail but without brushing.

The other one has to be sprayed with water and conditioner and brushed. She has to sleep in plaits and a sleep cap/bonnet which you can get from amazon.

Dont worry too much about products at this stage. Coconut oil or jojoba oil is fine! I would bd careful about shampoo and use one with low sulphates. Tresemme do a naturals range or Aubrey organics is good. Wash once a week MAX!

The key is to keep it moisturised well. So a small amount of oil and then comb. Comb daily to help with knotting....otherwise it will start to get matted etc.
A small plastic afro comb is very effective.
If hair gets very knotted then get a spray detangler, like the dark and lovely kids one. I use that on my sons curls when it gets a bit crazy!
