This newborn-no-sleep stage doesn't last for ever, does it...

I can't remember quite what it was like for my first, but my 1 week old simply won't sleep when I'm not holding him (well, we got a bit under an hour last night, big success, but that was it for the whole time, otherwise he was feeding or snoozing on the boob so I was awake all night).

Keep trying to remind myself just how very little he is, and that it's really early days. But I'm spinning out rather.

Anyone coming out of the other side of something similar?

Hi didn't want to leave you with no replies - - - it will get better.
an your partner help out?
maybe let him sleep on him a bit to let you get some rest?

how about putting a top that smells of you in his moses basket?
put a hot water bottle in there before you lay him down (take it out just before you lay him in ) and then the sheets will be nice and warm for him.
it is very hard with a little one but you know from your other child that eventually it will get easier
good luck xx

Hi - I have a one week old too and I know how hard it is! I can only think of a couple of things that might help...

If you can, feed lying down on your side so you can nod off too if you want. I've kicked DH out of bed and co-slept so we could all get some sleep. Co-sleeping isn't really in our plan but I figure sleep has to be the no.1 priority.

Also, feed with the baby laying on a blanket then you can transfer the baby and blanket into the Moses basket and wrap the warm blanket around them, so the change of temperature isn't as much of a shock. I've also bought a lambskin this time so there isn't a cold mattress beneath him.

It does get better I promise!

Boomum it does get better! My DD is 13 weeks and now sleeps 6pm-6am with 2 breast feeds in the night.
At 1 week she'd only sleep on me in the night (and in the sling in the day)
At 2 weeks I could transfer her into the cot once she'd gone into a deep sleep (about 15 mins after she'd fallen asleep)
At about 6 weeks I could feed her, she'd fall asleep feeding and I put her straight in her cot.
Enjoy him whilst he's tiny! I did nothing to help her get better sleeping, it just came with time Smile

I just wanted to sympathise really. I have a 2 week old and also got 1 hours sleep last night! He just would not settle- the same nod off for 5 mins then demand the boob. It was our lowest point last night and I actually ache from head to toe with exhaustion.

He's angelically slept all day in front of grandma of course, so it looks like butter wouldn't meet in his mouth;) It's the night time which is a challenge thanks Gran!

Sorry, this doesn't actually help you, but I am going through the same thing. If you have the luxury can you rest up in the day? I've actually refused to get out of bed all day (got up at 7pm for dinner) and slept on and off all day. Still in my same PJs and feel a lot better for it!

it does not. all mine were like this and it didn't stop time flying by ridiculously fast. I solved the problem as much as I could by co-sleeping, just let them fall asleep on the boob and and I could snooze as well. It will get easier, I remember all too clearly the 'out of it' feeling you get when you've just had a baby!

Hello - you're all lovely, and congratulations to others with newborns too.

I'm really making the most of sleeping during the day actually, whenever I can get anyone to hold him for an hour or so. I think I give far less of a damn this time around about trying to do anything else other than sleep and feed the baby. I'm going to try to make the blanket feel warm and smell right actually, and we're co-sleeping because (as far as I can remember) that was the only way I managed the first time. I just cannot get the hang of nursing lying down though, think it might just be that I'm a funny shape.

Isn't it just mad though? That all over ache from having no sleep is really pretty special.

One night at a time, I suppose. Thanks for posting and helping a tired person in need, and hope it gets better for all of us in the middle of it at the moment, really soon.
