Underweight child and car seats

So sorry if I have been thick and posted this in the wrong place please feel free to slap me on the wrists and point me in the right direction :)

Ds2 age 3 is quite underweight for his age 23lbs (have finally got to bottom of it we hope but is likely to take a while before we can get the weight on him) it's prob a stupid thought but how does moving on to a booster seat work when they are underweight? I left him rear facing until he was about 16 months and out grew the car seat length wise Hv said even tho he wasn't quite heavy enough (19lbs ish at time) it would b fine. He often asks to go in ds1s booster and obv I tell him no he's too small but most of the kids he's at nursery with r all in boosters he sees this and has started asking why he can't. I know he is waaaay too small and no way will I let him go in his brothers booster as it's simply not safe for him however I can't help feeling bad for him and I can't see him weighing enough when he starts school next year and I don't want him to b picked on feel different. Is there a car seat that would b safer than a booster but look less "babyish" (his words not mine) that I could move him on to when he starts school if he's still not heavy enough?

dd used a Britax Evolva Ultra with harness until about 6 , then as a booster.

We have an Evolva 123. It goes through to age 12. Start with the 5 point harness and then you can move to the seatbelt. Mine are tiny too but doctor just thinks they're small (DD2 is 4 and only 12.5kg and DD1 is 6 and only about 16kg)

Thank u I shall look in to that :) we have maxi cosi seats at the moment should mention also ds1 has a high back booster but ds2 is so tiny he just wouldn't b safe in it I don't think he looks lost

My dd recently turned 5 and is in YR. She still uses the harness in this stage 1-2-3 carseat as she is light and small. It changes to a high back booster for when they are bigger and booster cushion after that.

FWIW No-one in her class has ever even noticed what kind of seat she sits in.

Sounds like a good investment if goes to age 12! I don't think he'll ever be big but he's been losing weight since sept hopefully we can get him sorted and at least get him back up to just being a bit small lol

I think a 1-2-3 would be your best bet as it will allow for lots of growth without having to buy a new seat.

Hopefully he'll be gaining weight soon. I have a few lbs I could do with losing - he's welcome to those to start with Wink

We've got a Britax Evolva as well as ds got too tall for his previous seat before he was heavy enough for a booster seat. He used the harness until he was about 5 1/2 iirc.

lilyaldrin · 08/01/2014 14:44

One alternative to a harness is a seat with an impact cushion. We have a Kiddy Guardian Pro - it's quite expensive but lasts from 9kg to 12 years/whenever they no longer need a seat.

You need to use the cushion until they reach at least 15kg (35lbs) as the adult seat belt alone doesn't work until then, and can continue using it until 18kg/40lbs. After 18kg you just use the adult belt.

It does have more of the "look" of a HBB than a stage 1 seat.

Our DD was in her baby car seat until just over two because she was so teeny weight wise, we only moved her out when she outgrew it length wise. You did the right thing, by the way, as you shouldn't move them out of it until they're big enough for the next stage and have outgrown it.

I also recommend the Kiddy Guardian Pro - it will last the entire time you need a seat. It's so easy to get them in, as well as move between cars. We are really pleased with it. Yes, it's a bit pricey but you won't need another. Also, it (along with several other of their makes) came out top in Which's safety and review tests, which is good to know.

I also used a britax evolva 123.

DD1 was small for her age and still in a harnessed seat (Maxi Cosi Tobi) until at least the middle of her reception year - so until about 4.5 if I remember correctly but possibly older. DD2 is just as small and will remain in it until she grows out of it too. Don't be swayed by what others are doing - lots of DD1's peers in school are no longer using booster seats at all despite being 7/8 and definitely not tall or heavy enough to go without.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/01/2014 14:16

My DD is 6 and 16kg in weight, we've had the same problems. She's in a britax kidfix at the moment which starts from 15kg in weight. She's been in it for a year or so. Lots of her chums are sitting in seats now without booster seats of any description, or on the seat squab type boosters. DD will remain in her correct seat until she's too big for it.
