Two young children: how do you manage exercise

I've always been a keen runner and got back to regular exercise about 8 months after my DD was born. By the time she was 18 months old I was running most mornings before DH went to work.

However now I have DS (5 months) and DD ( 3years) and I'm struggling to fit in regular exercise. Running isn't really an option at the moment as it's too dark morning/ evening. Also I am really, really struggling to motivate myself after broken nights sleep.

I'd love to hear from others who a keen on fitness on how they managed, tips and motivation.

OP, do you have some time with one child only, eg when DD goes to pre-school? How about cycling with DS in a baby seat on the back?

do you know what? i would give yourself a bloody break.
Go at the weekend if you can be bothered ( and you know you will feel better for it once you are out there - load up a book or some great music on your ipod) or otherwise think " i am doing the best i can atm and in a couple of years I will be able to do more of what i like"

I should add that I agree with drnick btw - I just noticed your youngest is only 5 months old. At 5 months I was doing no exercise - my youngest is 16 months and it is only this year (!) I have started to exercise.

I have a two year old and seven month old. Also I have an amazingly supportive husband. I go to classes/swimming/gym 5/6 times a week and he looks after the kids while I do. To be fair though I am properly overweight and have health issues so losing weight and getting fit is sort of a joint thing for us. He now goes running before work.

Also just wanted to add - if your DC won't go off and amuse themselves to let you exercise in peace, I would really recommend a dance game (I have wii dance in various versions). Mine love joining in because it is just basically having a good old dance which children love to do (or at least mine do!). As long as you have plenty of space, they can jump around too whilst you're getting your exercise.

Am inclined to agree with DrNick, especially if you're knackered.

I should add that mine are now 10 and nearly 13, and I'm running every other day. It does get better!

thats ok though if your h is back from work in time for you to do that - when my kid were tiny mine was either in Texas or driving down the M3
