My little boy is 6 weeks old on Thursday and has been diagonosed with colic, how do parents cope with a colicky baby, I'm getting hardly any sleep he cries pretty much the whole time he is awake. It breaks my heart cos he looks like he is in severe pain, he has so much wind too.

Any suggestions on how to help, iv tried infacol, done nothing tried gripe water and he just chokes on it and it makes him sick, doctor had prescribed calpol but I can't give him that for the next 6 weeks every day surely.

Yer my little one brings his legs up and cries and looks like he's in agony, even wen he's asleep he's squirming around.

I never expected a baby to suffer so bad

My DS did that too. Things that helped were sleeping on his side (and now he's older on his front occasionally) and putting him lying across my tummy. Sometimes that settled it enough for him to be comfortable sleeping for a bit. Also walking around with him on my shoulder. He preferred that to sling early on.

The good news is they get better at getting wind out as they get bigger.

Have a think about tongue tie again, my DS did all of those things and it was tongue tie and upper lip tie. Like you, I had been told that he didn't have it. Have you tried the tiger in the tree hold to help with burping?

We used the tummy tub right from the first bath Smile

Hi I'm suffering with this too - DH is trying to calm her down as I write this! It's really hard isn't it. I worried mine has silent reflux and the GP has given her infant gaviscon, I'm trying it but only in a couple of her feeds per day (even though I hate the idea of her using something that's bad for kidneys and causes constipation, according to google/mumsnet!). Mine is 4 weeks old but 6 weeks according to due date and 'wonder weeks' says this is a developmental leap time - she should be coming out of it now though.

Thought I was getting somewhere today as she seemed calmer and slept quite a lot but tonight she's been crying loads and going all stiff and rigid, writhing around. Please keep me posted on how things go for you and anything you try that works well.

I dont know if you have tried this already, but we gave dd the gripe water in a bottle rather than using a spoon or syringe as those were making her choke. The gripe water really helped when she was windy and it also has an antacid in it which might help of your ds has reflux.

If he sleeps on his tummy let him with a monitor that has a mat under it. Colic sucks. My friend spent 12 weeks standing and swaying with a swaddled baby clutched to her

DS was exactly the same, in fact one day when he was awake & not crying my DD (4 at the time) actually commented on itGrin

He had reflux, not a really bad case, but enough that he was uncomfortable most of the time.

He wanted to feed constantly (to ease the acid in his throat) but would cry whenever he was awake.

From birth he made sort of gurgling noises when he was led down, and would 'leak' milk rather than full on vomit.

We were prescribed infant gaviscon at 5.5 weeks and the difference was immeasurable. Luckily the locum GP we saw had two DC that had suffered from reflux and she could see our misery. We'd tried everything recommended to us - upright after feeds, slings, Moses basket propped up at head end etc etc. meds were the only thing that really helped.

He's 3 next month & is a robust healthy little fella now Smile

Good luck, endless crying is miserable for all of you whatever the cause

Oh, and we didn't see any issues with constipation either. That's one of the reported side effects

Thanks for all of your posts by the way,
Had a bit of a restless evening last night l... He woke up at 6 last night and didn't sleep again till gone 1 in the morning, but what's strange is he had a really good night then throughout the day today he has been restless on and off not really sleeping again.

I never realised how common colic/reflux was until now, seems a lot of babies and families suffer
