Six day year old sleeping problems

Hi Everyone,

So happy to be part of this amazing community!
I've just become a very proud father to a beautiful son.
My partner and myself are having problems with him sleeping at night.
He's six days old and he seems to be quite happy during the day.
During the night he wakes up frequently crying. He's very, very sucky and likes to suck his fingers/hands a lot. We've been advised not to use a dummy and also a swaddle, but it seems the cot seems to big for him and we think he needs a cosier space to sleep. My partner has had problems latching on as well. Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you.

alatus, welcome to mumsnet :) Has your partner accessed any of the breastfeedling helplines for support and ideas on how to make these early days better?

It is normal and good for new babies to wake up in the night many times - they usually calm with a breastfeed, and then after a short time wake up again. This is not a sleeping problem in any way at all but normal young baby behaviour. Often a cot is as you suspect too big for a new baby. Think about how you can co-sleep safely, and/or an in-bed sleeper crib, and/or a bedside sleeper.

Agree with everything tiktok says. Just incase your DW hasn't got the Bfing Helpline numbers, they are here.

Thank you both for your help.
Really appreciated!
Your suggestions really helped!
He's been sleeping better in the pram and feeding better.

Thank you!
