considering changing to reusables - advice needed

i am considering changing to reuseable nappies in the next couple of months. ds is 8 months at the moment. would it actually still save me money to change this late on over disposables. dh is reluctant due to this cost issue.

ds is a heavy wetter at night especially. i have looked on the twinkle twinkle website and the advice on there suggested motherease or kissaluvs. has anyone used these?
i quite fancied the tots bots, but again i have to take cost into account with having to buy clothes in a bigger size due to bulkiness of nappy.

also is anyone using the new tot bots bamboozle or fluffle?

How many - we have 8 which means washing every day, i..e extra hassle and money. I had 8 wraps in the smaller size but realised only 3 would do so only bought 3 for the bigger size. I'm not hard-core, though, always use disposable at night time. My DD (16 months) is not a heavy wetter either so no accidents so far.

I think the recommended amounts are 15 nappies and 5 wraps. That lets you wash every other day.
I have loads more than that though, even although DS wears disposables at my mums and at night, oops! Beware it is an obsession.

The Fluffles and Bamboozles are lovely. Only ever had one of each to try. The Bamboozle takes a long time to try.

You can't really go wrong with Motherease Air Flow wraps with really any nappy. I like Motherease Sandy's as my son can undo applix. But I'd suggest buying a few different kinds 2nd hand to try them on your little one. Check out the buy and sell here and also on The Nappy Lady.

As for saving money, yes you should definately do that, unless you buy far too many like me!! But they have a great 2nd hand value anyway.

Hope that helps a bit.

Definitely still worth it. We didn't get organised with ds re: proper nappies until about 8 months, & still saved a fortune.

We're now using them with dd, but even if you don't re-use with a 2nd child there's the ebay option - just got rid of some of our surplus.

I'm a totsbots fan. Ds has a childminder who won't have anything to do with washables, so we've ended up dressing him in relatively fitted trousers for childminder/day out days; trackie bums or surf shorts when at home, & he always wears a washable at night. It sounds a faff but it actually isn't!

definitely worth it financially unless you believe my MIL who says all her children were trained at 16 months. But her memory is quite flawed, LOL, she told me all her children were weaned on homemade food, whereas FIL, on seeing me prepare food for ds3 reminisced that MIL "just used them jars".
And you get such a sense of satisfaction seeing them flapping on the clothes line in this lovely weather!

And if you want to save even more money, cut up a fleece blanket into wipes and make your own solution - it's dead easy, honest. And the wipes just get chucked in the nappy bucket, so it really isn't any extra trouble. I couldn't believe how much I'm saving - was gobsmacked at the price of wipes in Tesco's the other day.

Sorry, just remembered. I really wouldn't recommend Motherease for night-nappies. Tots Bots classics or bamboozles are the best. Or stuffies I should think are pretty good. I use them during the day because I find Tots work beautifully at night and if it ain't broke, etc. I've never tried kissaluv so can't comment on them. You can get Tots Bots classics very cheaply second hand at the moment, because everybody wants Bamboozles, which are slimmer and a little bit more absorbent. Try The Nappy Lady's classified ads for these rather than Ebay. 'Big' names go for a lot more on Ebay. H&M do cheap clothes that fit nicely over real nappies. And it's only the trousers/shorts that are a problem, so that's all you'd need to buy. And you never know - you might not need to get any!

Raggydoll · 25/07/2006 08:16

bamboozles are my favourites so far.

tots bots are best for night time as very absorbant.

meos are a staple

it IS cheaper, we changed at 10 months and its great not having to buy disposables every week.

on the downside - you need to be unfazed by poo as it be very 'hands on'. Also you may find some trousers don't fit anymore... we just used disposables with these items until they were outgrown. all subsequent clothing that we bought were rompers and dungarees.

however, i MUCH prefer the cloth nappies. we only have bin collection fortnightly and in this weather i hate to think what they would smell like if we used disposables. also i get lots of compliments in this weather because the nappie in on show and people love it!!

finally, cloth is MUCH kinder to your babys skin and lots of moms on here say how skins conditions have reduced since swapping etc HTH

Wambamboo!!!!! here

You see me plugging these everywhere, I swear I'm not on commission.

They are like bamboozles, but cheaper, slimmer, and a much better btp (fit my HUGE 3 yr old). Boostered with a microfibre cloth (£1 each from tesco, cheaper from £1 shops....), they are great for nighttime.

Next size up dungarees are ideal for little boys (or H&M I am being told) - girls are more awkward because they tend to have embroidered trouser legs that look odd folded up, but boys are easy to roll up legs .

It will save you a fortune (as long as you stay strong and avoid pretty wraps )

spugs · 25/07/2006 16:42

i have about 23 nappies and several wraps (i cant help myself with the pretty ones!) so i only need to wash once every 3 days or so. my DD also wears them on a night and there not much more hassle then disposables and much nicer. my favourites are tots bots and MEOS/sandys. did initially buy a load of fuzzis but found as shes got older (3mths old) they leak if she has them on longer then a couple of hours. id defnitly advise buying a couple of different types second hand and trying before buying.

SAHMof1 · 26/07/2006 13:17

I use Motherease OneSize mainly. They work well at night with the Motherease booster. Not had any leaks yet, but DS is only 3 months old. I also have some Minki and some Clwt Twt. I found terry?s too fussy, and prefolds too messy! It?s all personal opinion!

SAHMof1 · 26/07/2006 13:19

Oh, and I have 4 wraps (in each size) 19 MEOS, 5 Clwt Twt and some one-off?s that I tried.
