Thyroxin and the pill

I dont know if anyone can help - cant get to the docs now until after new years and hoping for some anecdotal advice. I have Hashimotos (underactive Thyroid) for which I take Thyroxin. I recently had a baby in August and it took 13 weeks for my period to come in, at which I started back on the pill. However since being back on the pill I just feel awful - stomach bloating up and down like a balloon, neck too, hair brittle again, memory becoming sporadic, mood swings, now I get heart flutters a few times a day and have had a low level headache for weeks. Last night I completely went off meat and ended up vomiting for an hour after eating some Bolognese - this was a sympton of when I first fell pregnant the last time.

I have taken the pill properly, and the first time I have been sick was last night, I highly doubt I am pregnant but I did look at google to see what might be going on, in absence of being able to see docs, and it says that the pill affects the thyroxin absorption - so this could explain the return of my Hashimotos symptoms, but then I also read it can in some cases make the pill less effective, I have only DTD twice (!!) and just finished a period (well a pill breakthrough bled) but that means nothing since I bled at the start of my last pregnancies (one ended in miscarriage). I guess I am looking for any advice? has anyone else had something similar?

maybe I am not posting in the right place but can move if anyone thinks of somewhere better to place this?

Thanks!!

I take both but haven't had a problem with an interaction as far as I know. My dose of Thyroxine is v low. I have found it hard to find a pill which suited me after dc and did get headaches with some especially in pill free time. You could POAS to rule that one out but otherwise I would suggest making an appointment. Our surgery is open today - you might at least be able to make an appointment.

Hi, there is an interaction between Thyroid hormones and oestrogens which theoretically means some people may require a higher dose of thyroxine. However, you shouldn't adjust the thyroxine dose yourself -ask your GP to do a blood test to check your thyroxine levels and go from there. I would think it is pretty unlikely that the pill is affecting your thyroxine though. I don't think thyroxine would reduce the effectiveness of the pill.

Hmm, I'm on thyroxine (low dose, 50mcg a day) and recently started the pill and have never been told the two might affect each other.

However now you mention it, I have had some side effects of the pill since I started it a couple of months ago (bleeding from mid month, headaches, a decidual cast - very odd!) but never thought it could be due to the thyroxine. last time I was on the pill, 3 years ago nearly, I wasn't on thyroxine.

Best bet I think is to get your thyroid levels checked to see if your dose needs changing. And POAS to set your mind at rest about pregnancy.

Thanks to everyone who helped me - I just wanted to do a quick update. I went along to see my Endocrinologist, but she referred me back to my Gyn. to get my pill looked at first. I live in Germany where this is the system - you don't go to your GP for this sort of thing. Anyway, Gyn. took some bloods yesterday, including testing for pregnancy. I did a test at home - was neg - but she wanted to do a blood test to be sure. Once she can rule that out then we will look at the pill and how the hormones interact, and maybe need then to go back to Endo. too. I should hear tomorrow.
