Is she too young to be self training?

dd3 was two at the end of last month, over the last week and a half she has begun to take off her nappy at various points during the day , put the seat and step in place, then going to the toilet (both types!). She then waits for her bottom wiping, puts the steps away, flushes the toilet and either asks for her nappy back or trots off to play!

Now, so far, she has not had an accident at any time she has chosen to have her nappy off, however, she is still wet and dirty in her nappy at other times (every day).

So, I have always allowed my children to self train and typically this has been at around 3 and dry nights has quickley followed dry days. I am desperate to get my last child out of nappies (oh the thrill of never changing another nappy ever ). However, I have resisted my selfish urges as I do believe it is best to allow children to be ready for this stage.

SOOOOOoooo wise mumsnetters is she self training, is she picking up on my selfish vibes and attempting to fulfil my unspoken wishes or am I reading too much into unrelated incidents that all two year olds go through?

Hula, did you do any "training" before hand?

WWB,it is a shame for her, that she wants it so much yet it is not coming. The only thing I would say about the three night thing is that I know a lot of children who never were dry in a nappy and had to go without nappys before they went dry IYSWIM.

Anyway, I hope she manages it soon, I know how frustrating it can be for a child - dd used to get very upset about it (Daddy will be upset with me etc) thankfully now she has accepted her lot and just gets on with it

Nothing before hand. We did have a potty in the house, but never used it. And as she is a first and only child she didn't have anyone to copy regularly, although had seen older children of friends going to the toilet on their own. At nursery she was one fo the first to be dry in her room, so no "training" there either. She just wanted to be a big girl Didn't even have any pants in - had to go and get some ready! TBH I think she was ready before then - met most of the "signs fo being ready", but I was hoping to wait until a school holiday (I was a teacher). Luckily she chose the Friday of a Bank Holiday!

bless her!

My major concern is that I always held that it was best for a child to self train and IME/IMU this happens about 3 - I had thought it could be 2.9 to 3.6 ish and was totally unprepared for this - andI am terrified that I may have got it wrong and end up pushing her too young with major psychological trauma to her when she is ready to try again IYSWIM!

Ooh parenting is such hard work isn't it

Don't push her. Just let her lead. Get her some big baggy pants to wear if she wants them. And see how it goes.

She sounds ready..ds was 2.2yrs and very ready for training..I just waited due to being pg so once dd turned up withint 2wks ds was trained.

SecurMummy · 24/07/2006 11:05

Well, dd has gone off to nursery with pants on, she is very proud of her big girl pants and was telling everyone all about them!

She took her night nappy off and had stayed dry until 10, then we walked to nursery and she was still dry when she got there so fingers crossed

well done secur thats exactly what my dd did aged 2.5!
She has also night trained herself too, deciding when she wanted the nappy off!
Count your blessings

good luck securmummy!
My dd was the same, clean and dry day and night before she was two. I had hoped to potty train her before ds was born in any case (born on her second bday) and nightime was jsut a fluke. Sometimes it's jsut easy. Now the dts I knwo are going to be a nightmare...

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 24/07/2006 11:19

SIL's DD was dry day and night at 22 months - self trianed - so perfecly possible.

SecurMummy · 24/07/2006 11:22

Kelly - maybe not, my other three self ntrained at 3 and dd3 is making a good start - so you may get an easy ride with dts as well if you are lucky!

Sounds like she is going well

Kelly1978 · 24/07/2006 11:44

I hope so, but they have been a nightmare with everything else so far. didn't sleep, nightmare to wean, jsut generally little horrors!

SecurMummy · 24/07/2006 20:27

Well, mixed day really - dd3 did great all morning and up until 2pm, then she got tired and - in the words of the nursery nurses - wouldn't play any more!

So 5 changes from 2pm to 6pm, then she has been dry since she got home, using toilet etc quite happily!

We will see how she goes from here, if this is the worst of it then I am quite happy, if it gets worse I will just go back to the old way of offering a nappy every now and then!

Kelly - they sound great

Well, day two - two accidents - that I know of, dd3 has spent the whole day in the garden/pool with no clothes and 35 pints of factor 50

I am taking this as a triumph - even though she could have been having accidents left right and ceter for all I know!

Definitely looking positive so far

SecurMummy · 26/07/2006 17:15

Day three - includes a trip to town on the bus and a most unusal late afternoon nap

So far, one accident, I am jumping up and down with joy - I am so so proud of my little angel [glowing with pride emoticon]

We took dd2 to her martial arts tonight, dd3 was happily running around in the safe area when she flew past and 2 poos came out of her shorts and skidded across teh floor

Ahh well
