We have no car, we love to go out ( I need to go out ) but it takes at least 40 mins to get somewhere on public transport, and can be up to two hours to go to zoos and stuff..

DS is almost trained, just teaching him about trousers - he asks to go to the toilet etc, but he needs to go every half an hour really and his poos are very unpredictable...

What do I do on public transport when he needs to go? Is it polite to just whip a potty out? Also would putting a nappy sack inside a small potty work for erm, disposableness or do I need to buy a new fangled contraption?

Am feeling a bit nervous about starting to go out again but we neeeed to, we're going mad and if we play/make home made play dough one more time I'm going to plop my head into it and suffocate myself!

Oooh and also WHY have I never seen anyone out and about with a potty? Sigh lol, you just stay in the house for three months don't you..admit it..

I seriously find my (well, dd's) porta potty one of the best things invented!!!! Not only can you use it easily when there is no loo (or when a shop's loos are out of order grr), but you can just bin it (and i take some of that no wash handgel stuff to clean my hands afterwards).

Where dyou get porta potties... dyou throw the whole potty away or is there like a..bag ..thing?

Oh god I hate potty training.. I thought we'd managed the faffy bit!!!

mothercare. not sure where else..
basically it is a fold up potty (legs collapse), but the "potty" bit is a hole, where you attach the disposable bags. it's those ones you'll have read about on here.... with sanitary towel type thing in them to absorb.

how far in are you with the potty training? my dd was dry in april, but poos have only just been sorted in the last month.

I've got to the stage where he's dry and poos are pretty much ok, he took to it quite quickly - we're on day seven!

He's not quite understanding that he can't poo/wee in trousers, but I think we might crack that today (no accidents yet and lots of asking for the loo)

foldy up ones in Boots too. They were half price not long ago!

Fastasleep · 23/07/2006 09:58

Oh cool! DH is going to Boots tomorrow I'll give him orders to buy one... feeling a bit nervous...

but dyou think I'll get hounded off buses for using it on them?

Porta pottys are good for when you go out I agree, however might not work while you are actually en-route. I have to say that with my dd we used to go on long car journeys regularly to visit relatives and I would get her to wear pull-ups until I was sure she could hold on until the next service station. So maybe you could put some pull-ups on until you get where you are going and then take them off?

hmm

this is a tricky one.... my opinion is that people should try to use porta potties etc in a 'subtle' place if possible.... ie if you are in Tesco go to the loos in tesco, rather than the isles.... if in a street with shops if there is no public loo or shop with public loo then try and be discrete 'around' a corner or something.

I would guess if you were on a really busy bus then maybe it is a bit socially unacceptable to get out a potty.... but if the alternative is the child having an accident than surely using a porta potty is the better alternative...

If I were on a bus i couldnt care less if someone got out a porta potty for their toddler to use... i personally REALLY wouldnt care less...

BUT i can imagine some of the people not approving and that could make an 'awkward' situation. If its a double decker bus maybe upstairs if it wasnt that busy would be better, but its not excatly very easy to be discrete on a bus...

In a train no problem.... as most trains have loos anyway that you can nip to....

but i personally would be warey on a bus cause i imagine some people may not approve at all

(as i say im a nanny and i understand that when a newly potty trained child needs to go he needs to go now and not in 10mins time, but unfortuantely i dont think everyone thinks that!)

Fastasleep · 23/07/2006 19:24

I know NannyL... I'm a bit iffy about it! I can't really nip upstairs on double deckers because I have my 9 month old in the sling, which'll make getting the potty out interesting too!
