Confused about beeding needs for new baby...

Hello everyone, I don't know if this is the right place to ask for advice on this matter but I feel confused and overwhelmed.

Baby is due in 12 weeks so today me and DH went shopping for nursery bits and bobs. I'm just so confused as to what bedding we need for the cot!! I have seen some nice sets online but even though they specify they are for cots, they still include a duvet and pillow?? Surely that's not right?

Also - do you have a Moses basket for them to sleep in during the night (in your room) and then carry the basket downstairs to have during the day when the baby sleeps? Or have you got two separate Moses baskets?

Moses baskets actually don't look that big either - at what age do the babies typically grow out of them? And if it is before 6 months do you then move them out of your room and into their own so they can be transferred to their cot, even though they should be with you until 6 months old?? Or do you drag their cot into your own bedroom?? There's no way we could get a full sized cot into our bedroom Hmm

I'm seriously stressing over this.....

one moses basket if at all, they are outgrown within weeks, no pillows or duvets for under 1's, use a intercom once they are too big for your room or during daytime naps.

Hello, I don't have any babies yet but mines due in 7 weeks so we have got the sleeping arrangements just about sorted (but it's still so confusing!).

We have got a Moses basket in our bedroom, I think they can sleep in that until about 6m when they can sleep in their own room anyway. We've set the cot up in the nursery (well not yet, the place is still a tip!). We have got grow bags for it to sleep in, they say they are suitable from 8lb so maybe not birth but my NCT leader said as long as they can't slip the bag over their head it's ok. But we've also got sheets and blankets just in case. You then use a sheet and two layers of blanket tucked in so they can't pull them over their head. I don't think you're supposed to use duvets or pillows with newborns.

For downstairs naps I'm going to put mine in the pram carrycot as it's a lie flat one so should be ok. I'm really clumsy so don't fancy carrying a Moses basket around.

Hth, it's so scary trying to get it all right Blush

I had a crib for upstairs sleeping and the carrycot bit of the pram for downstairs sleeping. To start with I used a swaddle blanket and some covers for ds but soon moved him into a sleeping bag. I didn't use those sets with a quilt, etc as they aren't recommended until the age of 1. I would get some sheets and some blankets and see how you get on. Sleeping bags have a minimum weight to use them so may not be suitable from birth if your baby is small.

P.s. Ds did grow out the crib before 6 months but we managed to fit the cot in our room along the bottom of the bed so he could be in with us a bit longer.

Oh dear. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

You don't have to have a moses basket but they are convenient. Some babies hate them but most are fine.
My DD slept in her basket in our room for 2-3 months but she was a flailer and wriggler so used to wake herself up.
We couldn't fit a cot in our bedroom either so used a travel cot until she was about 7 months old when we moved her to cot in her own room.

Will you have a pram with a detachable carry cot? You could always put baby to sleep in that initially.

Oh, and you don't need cot bumpers. They look lovely but then can restrict air circulation.

Moses basket til baby is too big for it then cot in our room right beside our bed so the side can drop down for easy access to pop a dummy back in ! we kept the cot in our room til our son was 1 . DC 2 is still In Moses basket at three months x getting a bit big for it now tho

Writerwannabe83 · 30/12/2013 00:15

There just wouldn't be room for a full sized cot in our bedroom though. We are considering bypassing the Moses basket and getting a crib instead, one that is small enough to fit in our room but large enough to hold baby for 5-6 months.....

We got given both a moses basket and a swing crib for our DD (now 5 months).
She initially slept in the moses basket in our room, but only for about as month as she then decided she hated it! So we then put her in this swing crib - it was brilliant and she has only just outgrown it.

Up until a few weeks ago, we still used the Moses basket for naps downstairs, even though DD was too big for it. We now put her in the pram in the daytime if she needs a nap.

She is now in the cot in her own room - Like you we have limited space in our room. We have a baby monitor, so can hear her when she cries.

At first we used to swaddle her in a gro-swaddle blanket (light cotton), but she started resisting that after a few weeks so we put her into baby sleeping bags, which she is fine in.

I got carried away and bought coordinated bumpers and quilt etc for the crib, which we have never used - except to make the nursery look pretty before DD arrived!

What to Buy for Your Baby by Liat Hughs Joshi and Caroline Cosgrove is a brilliant book. It talks you through the pros and cons of all the different options and tells you what items are an absolute necessity, what's nice to have but not essential and what's a total waste of money. There's a whole chapter on bedding. They've consulted with the association that deals with the prevention of cot death (can't remember it's official name) so all their advice is bang up to date safety-wise. It's well worth investing in as it will save you a lot of money and covers all the stuff you'll need for an older baby as well as a newborn.

We had a crib in our room at first. Borrowed it and got a new mattress for a tenner. This was fine till he went in his own room at six months and DS not a teeny baby. For bedding he was in a swaddling blanket for a couple ofmonths and then a baby sleeping bag. At 20 months he still has a sleeping bag now unless the weather is warm. I would not bother with any cot bedding sets as they are a waste of money. If you want to get a quilt and pillow when your baby is a toddler just buy it later on. Bumpers are not a good idea, a suffocation risk for babies and a safety risk for toddlers who might try to use them as a step out of the cot.

just buy about three fitted sheets for the crib and later on, the same number for the cot. Two gro bags in0-6 months should be enough, you may also want a lightweight one for warmer nights.

DisneyAddict88 · 30/12/2013 10:08

both my dd's hated moses baskets! so went straight to cot - you can get smaller ones for small rooms think I saw them on kiddicare. and ones that attach to bed.

bedding - really recommend swaddling at first as comforting for baby and easier to put them down when they fall asleep on you! I just used a big cotton sheet but can buy specific swaddle blankets. then sleeping bags.

HazleNutt · 30/12/2013 18:18

co-sleeper cot is the best thing ever, so we have this in our room and a hammock downstairs for daytime naps. DS didn't like the moses basket and is a tall baby, would have outgrown it in weeks anyway.

Writerwannabe83 · 30/12/2013 18:30

I really like the idea of a cot bed - are you able to direct me to any websites or good brands? How long do they last for?

ikea gulliver cotbed with the side offf and tied to our bed with scarves worked well as a co sleeper then moved away from our bed gradually moving to the other room after >6-7 months.

both of mine refused swaddling and were not keen on buggy sleeping so i resorted to quite a bit of cosleepng. it might be worth printing off the safety notes on that before the baby comes when you are not sleep deprived.

I bought a lovely bedding set - waste of money! buy 2 good quality waterproof sheets and fitted cotton ones to go over. buy 2 baby sleeping bags with a 2.5tog rating for night and a handfull of fleece blankets for naps. dont pay more than £5 for a moses basket as their are loads of premium ones on ebay. you will not use it much but try to get one with a rocking stand. we only used ours in the day and used the cot/cosleeper at night.

dont spend a fortune on anything as they grow out of it superfast so most things on ebay are usually in good condition. if you happen to be wealthy use the savings to kick off their junior isa as they would much rather have help with uni fees or a house deposit than a fancy moses basket cover that they will know nothing of!

dont buy a branded sling either. just get 700mm width of 5m long lycra and sesrch youtube for films of ifferent sling ties.

good luck.

tricot39 · 30/12/2013 19:05

ps our ikea cot bed lasted until about 3 and they are.so inexpensive we could buy a second one.for dc2. those who bought fancy cots ended up having to.transfer their dc1s early and deal with rampaging toddlers sooner than they needed to!
