Ok so I have made a huuuuuggge mistake, bubba is almost three and still has a bottle....and when I say a bottle, I mean loads of bottles not just a night time one. I need to deal with this and get him off of them but it is so hard now he is so much older....he gets distraught without his bottle and he has only just started sleeping through the night and the thought of upsetting that might just result in me being committed!!! He just loves his bottle so much! But it has got to the point that I am embarrassed that he is still having them especially if we are out and about. I am good at (on the outside) having a 'I don't care what you think' attitude but honestly I do....

Please any advice is welcome, should I just take a week off work and cold turkey it???! Help meeeeee!

I feel your pain... My DD is 3 and still has one in the morning and one at night Blush

AND she won't drink regular milk so still has formula BlushBlush

I just hide it all in the cupboards so people don't see!

So no advice, just to let you know you are not the only one... Thanks

Will watch with interest for some tips.

My son was nearly 3 when he finally gave his up.

The bottle fairy came and took them away and left him a toy instead.

You could try that?

Twistiesandshout · 29/12/2013 12:22

Don't feel too bad... Dd is 3 and I just got her off the middle of the night ones, am keeping the evening bottle for her as she gets so jealous if 18 month old having bottle without her .

Will eliminate all bottles for both by the summer though - I hope!

Oh thank god it isn't just me then! It helps that I am not alone in this.....

Mine is still on formula too, won't even look at cows milk.

Lots of people have said the bottle fairy works, so will definitely try that. I need to throw them all out as otherwise I know I will give in. Thanks guys x

I think wean him off gradually, stop bottles in the day except one in the morning and evening.

Eaiser to deal with tantrum in the day than in the middle of the night.

Know that a tantrum is just that a tantrum, you are the parent and make the decisions about what is best for him.

Just offer his milk in a sippy cup and if he refuses ignore and don't worry about it. At age 3 he shouldn't need the milk anyway as long as he is getting a varied diet.

DS1 was 4 years 4 months before he gave up his bottle of milk before bed. He only gave up when DS2 was born as he realised that babies have bottles too.

DS2 is 3.5 and has milk at home in bottles but out of cups at nursery.

Personally I wouldn't stress it. If their dentist is happy that the bottle isn't impacting on their top palette and teeth that might put you at ease.

Discovered last year that a friend was giving her 8yo a bedtime bottle still Shock so you are not alone.

Agree about dropping daytime ones first but I'd be tempted to just bin them and tell him the bottle fairy took them because he's such a big boy.

I feel my ds will be 18 before he stops bf! He is.only 21 months but has a meltdown when I say no. We tried Santa coming to take them away and leaving presents but he wasn't having it. Hoping he will suddenly grow out of it!

My son still had bottles at 3.5, we only stopped because I was trying to potty train. Every pic I have of him from those days, he is clutching a brimming bottle of milk.

He is 15 now- hates milk but loves milkshake!! Don't worry!!!

I had a bottle before bed until my 2nd teeth came through (about 6/7)

I really loved my bottles.

Don't be too hard on yourself. I really don't think it is a problem.

DD2 is 3.2 and still has cows milk in a bottle at bedtime and sometimes in the morning. She will also ask for it during the daytime if tired or not well (and occasionally gets it).

We've tried moving onto sippy cups, but no joy. She is adamant, and we go along with it to keep the bedtimes calm and so that we all get a good nights sleep. DD1 also had her bottle for a while but I can't for the life of me remember how she gave it up.

I'm not overly fussed by it at the moment, we prioritised potty training, settling at pre-school, getting rid of the dummy and my return to work full-time, so it's just a question of one step at a time I hope!!

The bottle fairy could also bring a really cool big boys cup with a character he loves on it.

Yep, ds is nearly 3.5 yrs and still has bedtime bottle of milk. Recently it has become breakfast time, afternoon and bed time bottles of milk. Comfort I think. Reckon he is still little, why not. Do wonder when he will stop though...

PacificDogwood · 23/01/2014 09:26

We went to Boots or wherever and DS3 chose his own toddler cup. Then the bottles and teets disappeared and he got milk in his cup.
He decided he did not like the cup, could not find the bottles and just stopped milk altogether Grin.
Which also got him dry at night virtually over night - result! He was almost 4... Blush
