Amoxycillin - side effects?

Hello

My 2 year old was diagnosed on the 24th dec with either a urine or throat infection (the doc couldn't see as she was too distressed) and has been taking 3 x 5ml of amoxycillin 3 times a day.
She has been poorly since the 22nd.
Although her temp has gone, she is still very subdued (to be expected) with no temp but won't eat hardly a thing.

She normally eats everything and anything. So she hasn't eaten anything other than jelly or tinned peaches since the 23rd.

Has anyone had a similar experience with amoxycillin? She's not talking much yet so I have no idea what is wrong. I've looked it up and there are side effects such as loss of appetite and dry mouth.

What do you think? Any advice very appreciated. Am I being a worrier for nothing? She's a twin and the other one is eating fine.

Thankyou all

The only ones we have experienced are very runny nappies and oral thrush. I guess if age isn't well anyway, she will be off her food. How much longer is the course? Hoped he picks up soon.

when my son has them he developed a sore mouth, the doctor told me the good they were doing out did the side effects of a sore mouth. He had thrush in his mouth and his gums were pretty red and sore. He was about 7 to 8 at the time,

would she eat some yoghurt? plain or otherwise?
apparently it helps replace the good flora in the gut that anti-biotics strip out.

Three 5ml spoonfulls of Amoxicillin seems quite a big dose - are you sure that is the correct amount?

fridayfreedom · 28/12/2013 20:26

I can't take amoxicillin due to a rash from it but other antibiotics give me horrible tummy pains. Maybe she still has a grumbly tummy

It's normal for a small child to lose appetite when they're ill. Also I think a uti can make them feel quite sick so that might be part of the problem. I can't remember a time when my two haven't been off their food when I'll, it's the first sign something is up. Don't worry, it only matters that she is drinking enough especially with a uti, find what she will eat and give her plenty of that, ice cream usually works! She will catch up when she's better and you will be amazed at how much she packs away to make up for it!

Oh and if she has literally only eaten one tins of peaches since 23rd you need to go to doctors today!

Dd and ds are both on amoxicillin for their chests at the minute. Dd is 4 and ds 7 months, and they're on the same dose, 3x5mls. He's had very squirty nappies and is off his food but is teething too so not sure. Dd loss of appetite too. Hope she feels better soon, poor little things being ill over Christmas.

I would check her tongue for oral thrush (white coating)

Amoxycillin always puts ds off eating, and gives him an upset stomach.

Make sure she is drinking enough, she may be subdued because she is a little dehydrated?

ReastieYuleANBU · 29/12/2013 07:53

I've had amoxycillin a few times and it gives me horrible stomach ache which has lasted for days after I stop taking it.

PointlessOP · 29/12/2013 09:11

5ml three times a day is the usual dose but the OP suggests that her DD is on 3 x 5ml three times a day (i.e. 15ml three times a day) which is way too much for a 2 year old. Just wanted to check as side effects will be greatly increased if she is taking too much.
