Hi there.

My son is 16 days old and I'm currently bottle feeding. He's on stage 1 aptamil formula and is feeding every hour, day and night! He takes around 3-4 ounces each feed.

He was 8lb 11 born and now weighs 9lb 12. When his fees is due he always apears starving like he cant even wait for me to make the bottle. As he is feeding every hour it feels like i am constantly feeding him. I can't go anywhere by time i feed him and get ready he's looking for food again.

Do you think i should try him on the hungrier baby formula?

I think I would switch to a hungry baby formula if its as you describe.

Try cow and gate. It takes babies longer to digest and keeps them fuller longer. Made by same manufacturer as aptimal and similar ingredients.

No he is too young for hungry milk, it is designed for older babies to help hold them off when too young to be weaned. Are you sure he is hungry and not just wanting to suck? Have you tried a dummy?

Yes try a dummy. Also would he take bigger bottles? (Is that OK at his age?) Seems to be the golden rule, hungry babies need more milk rather than trying to stave off feeds with "hungry" milk etc. Also I think it is quite normal to be feeding hourly or so as he's so little.

What about buying those big 1l bottles of ready made so you don't have to make fresh each time? And cartons when out so you don't feel like you're making up feeds constantly.

Hungry baby milk is probably not the answer. The official advice for formula fed babies is the same as for breastfed babies: feed on demand because your baby knows best about how much he needs.

Hungry baby milk has thickeners in it to make it feel more filling. It is not more nutritious.

Dummies aren't recommended for any babies this age, whether formula fed or breastfed, because they can mask feeding cues and prevent you from being able to tell when the baby is genuinely hungry.

If your baby is just looking for comfort, maybe you could try putting him a sling (soft carrier or wrap so that he is right next to your body - a great way to comfort your baby while being hands-free and able to get on with other stuff).

Is this your first baby? It does get easier, honestly out does.

Up the oz at each feed, and switch brands - I used SMA.

Use a dummy between feeds.

Time your feeds from the start of a feed to the start of the next feed, so if he feeds at 7,.and takes an hour, then wants his next feed at 9, thats two hours.not.one.

Aim for three hourly if you can.

greenbananas · 21/12/2013 17:47

Oh and ready made formula is a great idea - could save hours of hassle and you can then respond to your baby more quickly.

It's totally normal for a 16 day old baby to want to feed this often. He will space feeds out naturally in his own time.

clairikins · 21/12/2013 23:06

All the brands are the same. They have to be by law. Anything they claim to add has no proof to be better for babies. If they could prove it then it would be in all brands of formula.

There is no need to use hungry milk at all. It's a marketing ploy. The only thing it's linked to is a rise in obesity in later life.
