Omeprazole for baby

My 4 month old DS was prescribed omeprazole at the hospital the other day. The doctor prescribed liquid but the hospital pharmacy issued tablets as they said the liquid is too expensive. The tablets have to disolve in 10ml liquid and then give him half of it.

I've done this twice now and I'm concerned that I don't know if he's getting the correct dosage as the tablet doesn't disolve properly, there is sediment left in the bottom. I think this is because they aren't actually dispersible tablets.

Was your baby given liquid or a tablet to try to disolve?

We used Losec MUPS, but the way you've been told to dose is very inaccurate, because you get 5 ml of the liquid and a random amount of the little balls that actually contain the medicine. Get the doctor to agree a dose that corresponds to a full or half tablet. Dose range is 0.7-3 mg/kg so you normally dose in 5 mg increments.
Use an orange neurofen syringe ( bigger hole) put the half tablet into the syringe & draw up some warm water. Shake to dissolve tablet. squirt into child's mouth. You'll be left with some granules in the syringe, draw up a bit more water and repeat until you've got 99% of them in. You can do it in 2 or 3 goes.
The liquid is £200 a bottle (3 yrs ago) and bitter tasting, also has short shelf life. The MUPS are fine once you get your technique right.

We have Losec MUPS too. The pharmacy said to do it the way I described as it was more accurate than breaking a tablet. Ha!

He needs 5mg so think I will break a tablet in half and do it the way you describe because the other way I have no idea whether he is getting anywhere near enough or too much of the actual medicine.

Thanks

Next trick is getting DS to actually swallow the liquid! It obviously doesn't taste very nice as he keeps spitting it out!

Loser mups here too

If you break or crush omeprazole tablet it doesn't work - destroys the meds. We use a neurofen syringe too - but we syringe the water 5ml into

Small Cup and dissolve tablet, swirling it gently every so often. We then syringe it back up. It takes a bit of time to dissolve. And I never get 100% but get most of it.

Losec! Stupid phone

we used half a tablet so that I knew all of it had to go in, dissolved in a teaspoon of water. Then tipped teaspoon into his mouth. Better as didn't have to bother with syringe and easier to get him to swallow it. I thought for a few weeks that the meds weren't working but I was only getting a tiny bit into him using the syringe.

Bakingtins advice is great. We actually moved from the liquid to the tablets as although it is a PITA, they are more effective, plus you save lots. Hope it works for you!

We were given liquid and it was so easy, with a little syringe and it went straight down. DS seemed to live it as it was quite sweet. Each bottle only had a shelf life of one month though, kept in the fridge.

like it not live it! Sorry

In a couple of months time, when weaning starts, you'll be able to dissolve it in water then add to fruit purée on a teaspoon. DS loved it that way.
