Are his nappies/pullups dry in the morning? If not, don't bother.

Being dry at night isn't something to be taught as such since their bodies have to produce enough of a particular hormone that stops the bladder filling up over night.

totally agree that you should not force the issue too early... but dd1 was about this age when she became dry at night. she was not dry tho, before we ditched the nappy as she was in the habit of doing a wee in her nappy first thing as she knew it was there! i do think that there's a time when some go into a lighter phase of sleep and can 'choose ' to do it in their nappy or jump on the potty. a bit like pooty training in the day, my dd1 had tp 'learn' to do without her nappy. as soon as she felt thewetness of wee, she would - most of the time, jump up and do the rest of it on her potty.

Thanks everyone. ds has been having dry pull-ups in the morning about twice a week.like noonar I think he is now in the habit of doing it just because he can! what do you think about lifting them when you go to bed to do a wee? is it not defeating the object as they are relying on you to put them on the potty? or does this start them off? what's your experience?

I did lift ds just as I was going to bed, just for the first few months.

Best advice I can give is to buy two sets of water-proof bedding. Put one waterproof sheet, then a blanket - then another waterproof sheet, then the last blanket on top. Then if he wet, you can just whip the top layer off without having to totaly re-make the bed. (Hope that makes sense?)

And the obvious - lots of praise when he is dry. DH made the mistake one night when very tired of giving DS a disapproving look, this really knocked his confidence and made matters worse I feel.

Great tip Saintshar about the sheets

Just to butt in. How long have your children taken from toilet/potty trained to being dry at night?
DD has been toilet trained since the end of March but still has very wet nappies on a morning.

dd1 was dry in day at 2 1/2, at night it was 3 1/2. we hard hardly any accidents, day or night- beyond the first week. i reckon its cos we left it nice and late.we also used the double sheet/ water proof set up. we have one rubberised brushed cotton sheet that she can sleep directly on top of, then wip it off in the night if she wet. we lifed for a month or so, just to increase chances of success. but we soon stopped as dd was getting cross at being disturbed. we also have a potty right next to bed, next to a night light. this makes it easy for her to jump up in the middle of a wee if she starts to wet, iyswim. still has the potty at 4.4.

ps dd2 is now 2 and clearly ready for potty training but we're gonna wait till after our hols- if you leave it til they're more than ready, it takes no time at all, in my exp.

dont agree about the nappies being dry in the morning. DS is 2.9yrs and has been night trained for 3mths. I didnt think he was ready because of the soaking wet nappies..however it turns out he was peeing in them for the fact that they were on and he knew they held it. I only trained as he asked for no nappy so thought will try for 3nights and see. He hasnt been back in a nappy since and only had one wet bed on night number2.We didnt do lifting out as we tried first night and it made him miserable. DS just knows he has to have a wee before bed and then has half a cup of milk at bedtime. I know I have been very lucky but just thought would say about the wet nappies. Good luck.

great tip about the double sheet set up -THANKS!!, well cheers for all the encouragement. last pull-up in action tonight and then here we go! ds was 2 when we started potty training as he was showing all the signs and i was also expecting ds2. he took to that really well and was dry by 2.5. I just hope it's as easy in this situation.
