Red raw and bleeding nappy rash on newborn

Baby is 2 weeks old. Bottom looks very sore. Tried sudocrem, bepanthen, drapolene, metanim. Dr prescribed timoline. Using cotton wool and water to clean, making sure dry well afterwards. Nappy free time although baby hates it so not for long. Around 15 dirty nappies a day, bottom never gets a chance to recover! Any ideas what else we can do? Getting desperate as it's now starting to bleed!

What nappies are you using? My youngest was allergic to something in pampers.

curlyclaz13 · 20/12/2013 14:43

Yy to change nappy make. We used naty nature and had no rash, pampers left rash v quickly.

AmandinePoulain · 20/12/2013 14:43

15 dirty nappies a day sounds like a lot to be honest. How is their weight gain? What do the poohs look like - are they runny, or watery? Do they smell offensive? How are you feeding? Is the baby very windy, or vomiting as well? I think you may need to go back to the GP to rule out a milk intolerance, although it could be normal for your baby.

I would continue with the timodene (it's good stuff), and avoid wipes and adding anything to the bath.

Using naty natural nappies. Was using pampers but changed to these 3 days ago. No visible improvement :(

Go back to doc. We had the same and were prescribed the next step up from timoline (2 days of daktarin, then daktacort twice a day). Using metanium in between. It's finally nearly cleared up after 2 weeks. Baby totally unbothered - seems to look much sorer than it is.

I also switched to wipes instead of cotton wool and water, and a bath (just water, no products) for massive poos.

littleomar · 20/12/2013 14:47

Oh yes nappies - pampers and waitrose on made it worse, think it was the mesh stuff inside. Sainsburys Eco much better.

PaschasDanglyReindeerBaubles · 20/12/2013 14:51

Could it be thrush? Ask the doc for an antifungal cream and continue the nappy-free time, water and no wipes.

AmandinePoulain · 20/12/2013 14:53

Timodene contains an antifungal so will treat thrush, but thrush can be difficult to clear so can take a good week of treatment to see a result. Has the baby got any white patches on his/her mouth - if so they may need oral thrush treatment too.

nomoreminibreaks · 20/12/2013 15:03

I hope this isn't patronising but is it the yellow metanium you're using? I had a friend who was using the white one not knowing there was a difference. The yellow one has always done the trick for us.

hardboiledpossum · 20/12/2013 15:48

Egg white worked on my son. I whipped it up and rubbed it all over.

ClairesTravellingCircus · 20/12/2013 15:51

thrush takes a loong time to heal, a wekk to 10 days, one of my babies also had it as you describe, and it took quite a few days before we saw any improvement.

Keep dry and in the air if you can as well.

MmeCinqAnneauxDor · 20/12/2013 15:53

Was going to say Bepanthen or Calendula by Weleda, but 15 nappies a day is a lot.

Are you breastfeeding?

Have you told the doc that? I'd be looking to have stool tested to rule out any tummy bugs.

MegBusset · 20/12/2013 15:53

DS2 had an awful reaction to Pampers (skin looked like it had been burned). It took over a week after I'd stopped using them, until it started to heal.

theDudesmummy · 20/12/2013 15:56

You get this urgently, you put it on thickly and like magic the bum will heal, promise. Really, really, it is true!

If baby hates having his bottom bare, sometimes loose swaddling of the top half can help mitigate that 'loose limbed' feeling. Keep a catch all pad under him/her and try to leave bare bottomed whenever they are asleep. Throw a loose cover over legs when they are asleep tp keep warm but air exposure is key.

Timodine always worked like a charm for us (this was over 19 years ago for younger child) and our older DD had Eczema and suffered terribly. Timodine had an antifungal in too and that cleared up any secondary problems adjunct to the initial rash.

Mamabear12 · 20/12/2013 21:18

Use sunflower oil mixed with water when dabbing babies butt to clean after dirty diaper. Wiping will hurt baby. Dabbing gently is better. Lots of air time in a warm room.

Breast milk! My NCT teacher said it's the best thing
