Choking on grape skins

I took dd, 19 mths, to be weighed yesterday, and during a discussion with the health visitor about what dd eats, the hv told me to be sure to peel grapes and tomatoes because she'd heard that a little boy had choked to death on a grape skin - it sealed the opening to his wind pipe. Dd adores grapes and eats tons of them, always cut into quarters. I used to peel them but haven't done for months now. I started to peel some grapes at breakfast this morning then thought for goodness sake, she's been absolutely fine, this is just yet more nannying, don't do this, don't do that ......! Has anyone else heard of this? I asked at the toddler group this morning and no-one had there. I'd be interested to know.

ds1 choked on a grape skin once. needed a bloody hard whack on his back (he was about 2) but i have only ever peeled one grape coz i thought oh wtf am i doing. As long as you supervise (or keep half an eye out if they are older) i don't see a reason to peel them. I do chop them for ds2 (15 months) coz he loads about 12 in at once otherwise!

I've never heard of that but I always cut grapes in half after my friend's little boy choked on one - it was touch and go, he went blue and lost consciousness, had to be revived by paramedics. I would have thought it's enough just to cut them up, tbh.

Never peeld one, but do know that small children can easily choke on a whole grape so always cut in half.

my dd choked on grapes on two seperate occasions and needed a lot of help to get them out - was a bit scary ! i cut them in half - i think you only need to do one or the other - i.e: cut in half or peel as the outsides are quite slippery arent they but if in half not as likely to slip down whole and lodge in throat HTH

I may be wrong, but I believe the boy in question swallowed a whole grape which blocked his windpipe. I always cut grapes in half.

expatinscotland · 19/07/2006 22:25

i cut them in half for dd1 - age 3.

LemonTart · 19/07/2006 22:29

never heard about the peeling thing either. Our playgroup cuts them in half as a health and safety thing though.

yummimummy · 19/07/2006 23:45

I've been giving them whole to DD (14 months) without a problem but I think I will start to cut them in half after reading this thread.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/07/2006 00:11

I give them cut in half too, although DD (16 months)occasionally pinches whole ones from her brother 96). Maybe I should cut his in half too.

brimfull · 20/07/2006 00:16

that a big age gap cristina!

iamapieceofcheesecake · 20/07/2006 00:29

I always cut my ds' in half, that way (touch wood) theres no way of him choking on either part.
That said he seems to disintegrate food within a matter of seconds as opposed to chewing on it!!

Astrophe · 20/07/2006 00:59

I also heard of a child who choked on a grape and died...and I've heard you need to cut or peel.

Also heard of children choking on corn chips and crisps and was told not to give them to under 5s (in Australia)...but seeing as crisps are the National Food of Britain, can't imagine that advice is given here...

Marshmallows are another no-no, apparently.
