Getting 7 week on better night routine

I would like to get him sleeping by 8pm the latest. Right now, he is sleeping by 9pm...eventually I want him sleeping by 7pm (like his older sister did/does!). I understand newborns usually stay up late and have their own schedule etc. But I really would like to start getting him on a schedule that suits this family.

He likes to snack ALL day long...so at night he doesnt take proper feeds, which makes him wake one time (or more!) too many! Right now I would love if he could:

7/7:30pm - feed well from breast or expressed milk bottle (4 oz)
8pm - sleep until 11pm
11pm - feed well from breast or expressed milk bottle (4 oz)
11:30/12am- sleep until 4am
4am - feed
4:30am/5am - sleep until 8am

How do i get him to drink more and snack less? I know babies have small tummies, but he should be able to take 4oz by now!! How do you stretch them between feeds a bit? I know I wrote a post about my breastfeeding before and feeling like he never drinks enough (so I keep offering him more and more...which encourages him to snack and never be fully hungry).

Your routine sounds amazing already tbh!

Is there a reason why you would prefer him to be asleep by 7pm? It's just that he's already sleeping for 12 hours overnight so it may simply mean an earlier start for you in the morning, iyswim?

Keep feeding him often as this is the way to establish, and maintain, your supply.

No no no! Not sleeping 12 hours at all! His sister does (she 22 months!). He sleeps MAX 3 hours! Usually he sleeps by 8:30/9pm, wakes 11pm for feed, 2 or 3am for feed, 4 or 5am AGAin for feed. He wakes a few times in night for feed! I wish he could stretch 4 to 5 hours at night between feeds and sleep!

Oh and my supply I feel is established and maintained enough lol. It sprays him in th face and he doesn't like that. And I pump an extra 5 oz bottle a day (on top of hat he eats). I am starting to pump less frequently to reduce a bit. Ideally would like to not pump, but bc he doesn't like spraying milk and pulls off, I've had to pump.

Sorry, I misread your op. I thought that was your current routine, not your ideal routine. Blush
Still, If he's waking for the feed and then going straight back to sleep afterwards then that's not bad for his age. Do you cluster feed in the evenings to try and tank him up?

Waking three or four times in the night for a feed is a perfect routine for a 7 week old. He can't go four hours between feeds at this point - tbh you're doing well to get 3 hours at a time. His evenings will get earlier as he gets towards 12-16 weeks, but if you put him to bed earlier now his night-time sleep will worsen because he won't have had the chance to eat as much.

I'd say go with what he is feeling happy with at the moment - as long as you're making the night feeds quiet, dark and unfussy then he'll eventually start to fit in with your household's hours.
My son started to have his 'long' sleep from around 5pm until 10 or 11pm, then after that feeds would be every couple of hours as if it was daytime. By around 12 weeks I'd managed to tweak his bedtime to about 7.30pm and he'd sleep till around 2am, then a couple of weeks later it was about 7pm-3am.

No tips OP, just wanted to say it sounds as though my almost 7 week old is in the same routine as yours, except she tends to go down around 10pm. I'm also desperately trying to bring it forward toward 7 but so far failing miserably!

Mamabear12 · 19/12/2013 21:20

I manged to get him to sleep once at 7pm (by chance!) and another time 7:30! And then last night he refused to sleep until 10pm and tonight 9pm! I can't wait until he sleeps better!

You're doing better than me - DD is firmly in her 10pm routine at the moment!
