What tog duvet is your toddler using?

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 15/12/2013 23:03

2.1 yo is using a 4.5 tog cotbed duvet, with vest and pjs. Shouldi switch to single bed duvet (10tog)? The cotbed duvet seems very light....previously using 2.5 tog sleeping bags.

7 tog

Twinsplusonesurprise · 15/12/2013 23:07

Same as you but I put blanket on top when I go to bed.

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 15/12/2013 23:07

Do you think 4.5 tog is too light?

in summer 4.5 tog junior duvet. Now changed to 10.5 tog single for winter, both in pjs and vest. Although mine older 4 & 6

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 15/12/2013 23:15

Going to get a heavier duvet I think. I did feel as if the 4.5 was too light.

Just switched to 10.5 tog last week, her room was going down to 16 at night. She wears pjs, no vest, but is generally a warm child. I've had the thick duvet on for months now SmileShe was waking in the night and hasn't since we changed, so I think she was a bit cold even if she wouldn't admit it.

I think you should go with 13.5 Tog Duvets because its good and according to season it is best for child.

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 16/12/2013 13:39

I've just bought a 13.5 tog, and will keep the 4 tog for summer. why are the winter sleeping bags only 2.5 tog?

I think 13.5 would be far too heavy for a toddler

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 16/12/2013 14:56

Oh no really?? I just ordered one.

I am sure I have read (disclaimer: cannot remember where) that younger children should be under lighter duvets when they are small as they do not regulate their temperature as adults do and can easily overheat. This was when my kids were younger so may be out of date info

BarberryRicePud · 16/12/2013 18:54

13.5 tog far too high for a toddler!

DS 3.6 is in a cold room. Currently hits 15 degrees but can go to 12 in deepest winter. 2/3 tog cotton in summer, 4.5 autumn, 9 when it gets really cold.

Depends on the temp in the room of course but the younger they are the less they need. Real risk of overheating a 2 yr old with a 13.5 tog duet imo.

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 17/12/2013 00:05

Damn. I can't change the order. Maybe I'll just keep it until she's older then. At what age would a 13.5 tog be usable? It's for a single bed so it's not for a cotbed, so will be okay unopened.

So shall I buy a 10 tog? Or shall I keep the 4.5 tog all winter and just add thicker blankets when it east colder?

We have 4.5 tog for DD who is 3.6 - mainly because all 10 tog duvets were out of stock when I tried to buy one recently!

That said, we make sure her room doesn't get too cold and put an extra blanket on top if it does. She seems absolutely fine! I think kids don't feel the cold as much as we do and get too hot more easily (she's often running round the house in t- shirt and bare feet when I'm all wrapped up and wearing big fluffy slippers...)

Artandco · 17/12/2013 07:25

I would just add blankets this year. The white company only sells 4.5 and 7 as cot bed sizes so I'm assuming 7 is the max a young child should have. Most cotbeds last 5-6 years depending on childs size

SpookedMackerel · 17/12/2013 07:31

Both my children have 6 tog duvets from IKEA, and they are lovely and warm. I do set the thermostat so their bedroom doesn't drop below 16 degrees.

I would say 13.5 is far too heavy for a young child, I wouldn't want to go above 9 at the highest.

CrazyThursday · 17/12/2013 07:39

My 2yo is in a 2.5 tog grobag (plus pjs and vest) when she first goes off to sleep. When we go to bed we add about 4 blankets on top, her room gets down to about 15 when it's really chilly. Have contemplated a duvet but worried she'll kick it off and be cold as she's a right fidget.

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 17/12/2013 09:15

Okay thank you all. I'll just keep the 13.5 tog for when shes alot older - its single bed size so will last. Will use the 4.5 tog with blanket and when it gets colder I will either add another blanket or buy a 7 tog cotbed duvet.

OP posts:
rumbelina · 17/12/2013 09:22

'They' recommend 4 tog even in winter as toddlers are a lot hotter than us. Put blanket on when you go to bed if needs be.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/12/2013 09:23

DS2 will be three in March and he is in a toddler bed with a 7 tog duvet, and then a wool blanket gets added if it is really chilly when DH and I go to bed. I wouldn't put the blanket over while the heating was still on during the evening.

DS1 is five and for his single bed he has got one of those all season duvets. There is a 4.5 and a 9 tog which popper together so you can have a 13.5 tog if you want.

2beornot · 17/12/2013 10:32

My dd (3 in jan) has a 4.5 all year round, pjs but no vest.

Toddlers are a lot warmer than we are.

It's better to be too cold than too hot. (Cold will wake them, hot won't)

Tog ratings are standard, but 13.5 for a double is not the same as 13.5 for a single. The single one would be too heavy.

TwoMinutesToMidnight · 17/12/2013 13:19

I see. Thank you all so much. Going to keep the 13.5 tog for a few years time once she's over 5 and stick with the 4.5 tog and add/remove blankets as necessary. The house is warm as well so maybe I don't need to put a vest under her anymore.

OP posts:
ilovepowerhoop · 17/12/2013 18:41

the maximum tog recommended for a child in a single bed is 10.5tog. The maximum for a toddler/cot bed is 4.5tog. 13.5tog is far too hot/heavy for children

DeathMetalMum · 17/12/2013 20:06

Dd has 4.5tog and she is fine - she is never cold anyway really though so I don't really worry. She does wear socks and pj's and vest at the moment but can often be found out of the duvet where I replace when we go to bed.
