Bed time for 9 week old - 7.30 too early?

Hi, bit of advice needed. I've been putting my 9 week old to sleep at 7.30 each night, then doing a sleepy top up at 10 when I go to bed (he'd sleep through this if I didn't get him up). He's sleeping until 4/5 then having a gripe (which he resolves with thumb sucking) and dropping back off about 6 until half seven when I get up. My question is, should I be putting him to bed later? How long does he need to sleep, is this too much and would he sleep a full 8 hours if I put him to bed at 10? He does seem to be really tired at 7pm? Any suggestions or carry on as is? Thank you :)

At his age he needs about 15 hours sleep including daytime naps. Everyone does it differently, but to me it sounds like you have a fairly good routine going. When mine was that age she would not go down before 11pm as she cluster fed all evening but would sleep through til half ten the next morning. I prefered this to settling her earlier then being up through the night. We gradually made it earlier, and the more active she had been in the day the sooner she'd go to bed. She is 10 months now and goes at 8. A lot of people seem to think that's late but we like to have dinner altogether once my husband is home from work, and he likes to have a play before bed. Suits us. I am no expert but wanted to share my experiences. As long as he is happy I think you're okay. X

Sounds like heaven! Mine still cluster fed all evening at 11 weeks so put him down about 11.30!! #jealous

Enjoy it while it lasts! Sounds fine, he's too young for you to fine tune anything yet so stick with what works for you all.

Sounds really good. There is a school of thought that babies put down earlier sleep longer/better...
We're just beginning a bedtime routine with 11week old DS (6 weeks adjusted age) and aiming for 7.30 but he gripes for an hour or so, so more like a 9pm to sleep right now. He still feeds every 3 hours through the night.

Sounds like a great routine - keep on if I was you! Definitely no later.

Lucky you. My baby doesn't sleep more then four hours, marggghhh! He is almost 7 weeks.

Thank you, guess I'm over thinking it and pretty lucky with what I've got. Tried to change it last night and paid the price - he was up every 3 hours again. Hope I've not wrecked the good work!

Why would you want to change it???

What you're doing is what most people aim for. The only reason most 9 weekers are up til 10/11 is because they cluster feed or won't sleep. Most people's ideal would be 7-7 overnight and 3 hours of naps in the day.

You're very very lucky. Do NOT mess with it!!

This is very useful thank you for asking!

My DD is 10 weeks old tomorrow, and for the last 6 weeks we've had a routine of:

Bath at 7pm
Bottle/winding at 7:15-8:00pm
Bed until sleepy feed at 11pm, then sleep through til 6:00am

However... The last couple of weeks have been difficult as she's not settling at 8pm, and sometimes only sleeping thru til 2:30 or 3:00am. Probably just a growth spurt.

It's a massive improvement to when she was suffering severe colic - 5 hours of constant crying between 6-11pm!!

Good advice barberry, thanks, it only took me one night of trying something else to convince me to stick with it! He's waking up once in the night now, about 3 the up at half six. Hoping he'll sleep through soon, and that the fireworks won't keep him up tonight!
