Modern reusable nappies

Sorry if this has been done to death!

Baby coming next Friday. My DD who is almost 2.5 is still in nappies and has always worn disposables. Since Huggies have been discontinued I have really struggled to put her in nappies which don't cause chronic nappy rash. Naty nappies are good but she's quite big and the size 6 only just fit her. Want to get her potty trained probably in March when I'm not pregnant and the weather is hopefully better.

Trying to get my brain around reusables can anyone give any constructive advice.

Thanks

Their great, 2 types - fitted which include a nappy and a wrap, of pockets which are a stuffed 1 piece. There's a website called www.clothnappytree.com with a good classifieds section so you can pick up second hand ones and get lots of info - some people on there do take it all a bit seriously though....

I use pocket nappies - a brand called Dudeybaba which I bought off Ebay. They've got bamboo inserts so very absorbent, and they were very cheap too - I wouldn't bother with expensive brands. Fuzzibunz are another good brand.

The only thing is that you have to change nappies more frequently than disposables.

I tried totsbots easy fit. I got a trial pack, partly funded by my local authority (although I doubt they do that anymore). They're ones that are fully adjustable so should last the length of time the child will wear nappies. I sold my kit on eBay within a day, so it may be a good place to pick up a set to try.

We didn't end up continuing using them, I wasn't very well after he was born so didn't start using them till late and he drank so much milk he peed for England and I just got a wet lap all the time! A friend used PopIn nappies & swore by them and as far as I know is still using them.

I can heartily recommend Chheky Wipes www.cheekywipes.com/
They're so useful at getting the toxic sludge poop off newborns bums, snot off faces & also help wipe marmite off the sofa when they're 2!

I'm a bit out of touch with the real nappy network, but Totsbots easyfits are hard to beat imvho.

And with regard to sposies, have you tried Sainsbos or Boots own brand? or we liked ADLI ones, but they only go up to a size 5 I think. We also found that ALDI wipes were the only ones that dodn't set off her discoid eczema.

And on that note, it was her eczema that finished reuseables for us, but we did love them so.

I am currently trying out a trial kit which contains loads of different types of nappies through the local branch of the Real Nappy Network. You can find what is available in your area at Go Real. It's great for getting an idea of what will work for you, as there is so much information out there and it is all a bit overwhelming at first! The lady who brought our kit round was really knowledgable, and is happy for me to contact her anytime if I have any questions or problems. She gave us loads of printed information about each type of nappy as well, so I didn't have to memorise it all while she was here! Only two days in but it's already helping us get an idea of what we like.

I just can't help but be amused by the brand name BumGenius like the small child I am. Love it!

Thanks for this. I'll look into it a bit more. I tried boots nappies and they have recently repackaged them and they were horrific. I'll have to try Sainsburys.

The nappy lady has a questionnaire on her website and will email you recommended brands based on your criteria and what's most important to you (cost, drying time, size etc etc).

Bum genius free time are great. very absorbent and keep baby dry. Little Lamb very good too. Good luck

stollibolli · 12/12/2013 22:46

We use bumgenius the pocket version and love them, they are a bit expensive to initially buy but you can get them second hand. I can usually turn them around in a day and we use Aldi disposables whilst in the wash.

rootypig · 12/12/2013 22:46

A little OT but Aldi disposables are supposed to be excellent.

BikeRunSki · 12/12/2013 22:51

Tots Bots all in one Easyfits are very easy to use

BUT

Both my children are big and tall (DS - 91st centile), DD - higher 97th?) and had grown out of the birth to potty adjustable size heightwise by the time they were 2. I tried a few other brands, but nothing was big enough for DS - for DD (2.2) I haven't tried. I use Kiddicare "Just for Bums" disposables, and Bambo eco disopables at night (they are really, really absorbent), no problem with reaction/rashes.

4yoniD · 12/12/2013 23:05

Might be worth looking on the internet for a nappy-library or similar real nappy support group local to you?

4yoniD · 12/12/2013 23:08

bikeRunSki the biggest birth to pottys are Bumgenius Flip and Motherease one size.
DD2 grew out of most birth to pottys around 2, at exactly the same time that she grew out of size 2-3 clothes. I found those the biggest of all my nappies. Just in case that helps!

TheCurseOfTinsel · 12/12/2013 23:19

Motherease also do bigger nappies - Sandy's XL. These fitted dd1 until she was about 4/5 (and she is a big girl, centile wise).

Fuzzibunz are also available in larger sizes - look on ebay. I have some XXL for dd1, who is now 9, and she has plenty of room for growth in those.

Large Charlie Bananas would fit until around 4ish, I reckon, but might be a little tight on chunkier thighs.

There are plenty of larger cloth nappies available - Minky does some also, and others such as Holden's Landing from the USA.
