9 week old with cold - immunisations on Thursday?

Hi,
My 9 week old DS has his immunisation appointment on Thursday but he has been suffering from a cold for the last week. he has no temperature, no cough and is feeding well. His nappies are also fine. He is just very snotty. Should I cancel or go ahead with it?

I'm also concerned because he hasn't had any physical check up since he was born (hips, heart, eyes etc) so shouldn't he have had this first also?

I've phoned my HV and she was meant to call back but hasn't yet. Any advice would be great. TIA!

Ring the surgery. They will have a policy.

Id probably just take him along to the appointment, you can always reschedule. My dd has only just had her 8 week jabs at 11 weeks (whole other thread) so you can afford to wait if you need to.

Go with your gut. Hth

Wait, the hv hasn't done the hips or hearing, are you sure? That's normally done in the first two weeks when they come to your house. Check your red book?

Hi fast thanks for your reply. Sorry I didn't make that clear, the initial hips, heart, eyes, genitals etc check up was done at 1 day old but there is supposed to be an 8 week check up, I believe, which I haven't had any appointment for (I've had a check up with the GP at 6 weeks but that was just about me and she didn't ask about DS even though he was there with me).

My lo has just had the 8 week appointment this morning. It was a double appointment the doc first did all the checks and then the nurse did the injections. I would think going is a plan if you missed the earlier checks, you can always cancel the nurse appointment whilst you're there if your baby isn't up to it x

Inoculation reminders state you should attend even if they've for a slight cold, but I wasn't happy with doing this so delayed mine for a fortnight until I was confident he was better.

I was glad I did because he had a temperature after the jabs and if is have gone while he was ill already, I wouldn't have known what was what.

It also gave him a chance to fight things off one a a time rather than overload his tiny body.

However I also decided that, if he catches one thing after another all writer, I wouldn't have a choice. Luckily it hasn't happened but I would have had to go for it eventually if he was constantly ill, back to back, else he's have never received his jabs!

So as long as it's only a week or two it seems a sensible idea to me.

Sorry for the typos!

I had the same thing - ds was only slightly poorly and I postponed. Only because 1) if his immune system was already fighting something I didn't want to overload him and 2) if he got worse after jabs I wouldn't have known if it was an adverse reaction to them or his illness.

Go with your instinct and check with dr if any risks with postponing. My ds is 11 weeks now and still not had his...fastwindow have you got a link to your other thread? I'd be interested to read it.

rh it wasn't a thread on its own but a few posts as part of the postnatal September thread, are you on there?

Hopelass · 11/12/2013 11:15

Thanks everyone for your advice, I've just spoken to the surgery and his appointment is for the 8 week review with the GP and for imms afterwards so as a previous poster said I can always cancel the imms if necessary although he does seem to be getting over his cold.

Just another cheeky question, how did those of you who have been through the 8 week imms find it afterwards in terms of any side effects, sleepiness, fever etc? I have read some horror stories and I'm worrying now!! Can you all tell I'm a first time mum!?! Confused

No not on there...will try and find it!

First time mum too Hopelass and just as worried about everything!! :)

laughingeyes2013 · 11/12/2013 14:00

My first didn't react at all.

My second had a temperature and was grumpy for about 48 hours.

It was all over very quickly!

FastWindow · 11/12/2013 15:35

My dd had a couple of nastier nappies than usual, and was a little whingy but no temperature. I didn't even need to give any calpol. She slept a bit more than usual the following day though.

Hopelass · 11/12/2013 16:01

Thanks ladies much appreciated Smile

DD was a bit sleepier than usual during the day but back to normal by bedtime. No calpol needed.

rh2004 · 12/12/2013 20:10

My LO had his first jabs today and was really not himself after! He was sick and kept crying like he was in pain and he never usually cries :(
