Potty Training on Grandparent's carpet

We have just started potty training (DS 2.8, about a week in) I have been pretty free and easy about it as we have no carpet downstairs and a leather sofa. DS has only managed to go in potty once to do poo and has wet pants/pooed in pants many times. Currently I am trying to use pants at home and pull ups if we go out. He is back in nappies at nursery as I think it is only fair to ask them to start helping with potty training once he has actually gone in his potty a few times.

Anyway, we are off to stay with grandparents for a week next week in their immaculate, carpeted house, so my questions are is how have you dealt with pottytraining on carpet? Do you have any practical tips?

MIL is quite shocked that we haven't started potty training before now, so although she will be protective of her carpet I don't think she can really object to DS not using nappies.

Are his poos runny or can they be scooped up easily with minimal staining of carpets?

poos fairly scoopable at the moment. (Depends on what he has been eating)

We are not only visiting grandparents, but leaving DS with grandparents for a couple of days. I am hoping that MIL will have potty trained DS by the time we get back.

Oh goodness - pull ups all the way. Potty training doesn't move houses well - we went away twice in the first month of training ds and we just put pull ups on and encouraged toilet, but he had heaps of accidents.

Once he was home again he was sooooooo much better.

And you mother will not do it for you - just tell you how it is "all too late".

The carpet will stink forever. I replaced ours with laminate as no amount of cleaning freed it of wee. BUT you could try plastic tarpaulins on the floor, camping groundsheets or large plastic tablecloths. It would be easy to use pull ups, keep it stress free and dont draw too much attention to mistakes while you are there.

we have carpets so when ds was training we put his potty in middle of living room on a plastic mat[one of those food catching ones] and luckily if he even started to dribble a little pee would pick him up and put him on the mat so at least it was wipeable....was only so obsessive as our carpet was less than a month old..lol

we are saving potty training my 2yo til we've moved from rented house which is covered in brand new beige carpets. as she's not ready yet it's no real hardship but I don't see how we could actually do it in this house.

i'd put back in nappies for the week i guess.

Hmm TBH I slightly question your timing of starting potty training at this point with this visit impending. But I am of the Cod approach to potty training of going cold turkey. My DD (2.2) was trained two months ago. The first weekend we didn't go anywhere (started Friday). Then Tues -Thurs she went to nursery in pants. Then we add a small trip to Asda in pants (not full shop) on the Friday. Then an afternoon at my ILs on the Saturday and she had one accident on the carpet. But also outside. I found this reasonably stressful. She has not subsequently had an accident on anyone's carpet.

The weather is on your side though. Could you spend a lot of time outdoors? What is the kitchen flooring?

But Bozza and threebob, we are going to stay with the foremost potty trainer in Wales! Surely I could mention something about how other grandmother is helping us with potty training (white lie) - you know create a little competition...

Anyway, thanks for advice. We will actually be outdoors/on the beach most of the time (how could I have forgotten this important fact?), so I think we will do no nappies during the day (clearing up after ourselves of course) and use pull ups when we are in the house. If MIL wants to try pants then that is up to her.

Bozza, had your DD used the potty much before you went cold turkey?

Once successfully. Being on the beach a lot will be brilliant though. Healthy competition - yeah why not?
