I have a 4 week baby who has recently become very difficult to settle to sleep. He used to fall asleep whilst BF but now I need to hold and rock him for at least 20 minutes with a dummy before he will fall asleep.

When I go to move him to his cot or Moses basket he then either wakes up instantly or goes down for about 20 minutes before he wakes up crying.

Today he has been awake since 11am - it's now 2.30pm - he is clearly tired but won't settle without being in my arms.

Any advice great fully received

Have you tried swaddling him?
My daughter did this till I started swaddling her.

What i do with my 6 week old is to gently rock the moses basket, forward back (not side to side). It sends him back to sleep most, but not all of the time. Sometimes v quickly, other times it takes about five minutes. It might be particular to my LO, but easy to try...
What i will do when he is no longer in MB, god only knows!!!

What is happening, btw, is that there is a natural arousal from sleep at about 5 and 20 mins after dropping off, and your baby is not in a place he expects to be and/or feels familiar and comfy with, so doesnt sigh and drop back to sleep. My first dc never did get used to anywhere but sleeping on me, but my dc2 is getting used to the moses basket well. Hope yours is like my second!

After 3 weeks babies suddenly wake and become more difficult to sleep. It can be frustrating. It's like they fight their sleep! Don't they know, when they become adults how precious sleep is?,! With my first I learned its constantly about finding new sleep tricks on getting them to sleep! From pushing back and fourth in stroller, wearing in sling, bouncing, sing, breastfeeding etc. It was like my days were a mission to get my daughter to sleep! And no - it didn't ruin or cause sleep association problems. She learned how to fall asleep on her own and has become the best sleeper now at almost 22 months. I forget exactly when she learned to just sleep on her own after being put down...mayb 3 or 4 months? Most newborns/ young babies need help to sleep. Wish they could just sleep 2 hour slots during day and 12 straight at night!
