Snuffly 8 week old keeping me awake - at my wits end!

Please can someone advise me. My 8 week old DS is really struggling with breathing through his nose. I have asked the HV, GP and numerous other people and just get told tilt his crib, saline drops/spray, steamy bathroom, water in the bedroom etc and none works long term. He is too young for Karvol, olbas etc.

The only thing remotely useful is the saline spray which at best works for about 3 hours and then he wakes himself and me up with his breathing. The poor boy sounds like he is choking and it's scaring me witless. OH thinks I'm over reacting and just goes to sleep in the spare room. Has anyone any other advice as to what I might try?

If it weren't for this problem he would be sleeping through, he isn't waking up hungry just frustrated that he can't breathe. I'm so tired, please help?

I've also tried a nasal aspirator with no luck. He is fine in the day, even lying down in the day is fine it's just as soon as we go to bed and then all through the night. Have even tried changing rooms with him..,

Mine is the same (also 8 weeks), I've found 4little1 baby nose clear room vapour helps a bit (a couple of drops in some water in a bowl on the radiator).

Thanks Mrs Dean, do you (or anyone else) know whether this is a phase that they grow out of? I don't want to go through all the hassle of getting an appointment with the GP if there is nothing they can do and if he might grow out of it soon....anyone else have experience of this?

Just want to add that he is usually better than this. He has been snorty since he was born but on two occasions over the course of about a week it has been much worse and I'm wondering if it is a cold.... He is perfectly happy and hardly snorty in the day though which is what I don't understand!!!!

Poor lad has just sneezed five times in a row!

TIA for all advice I'm vey grateful Smile

oh sorry, just read the bit about sounding like he's choking, ear plugs only for normal snufflines and snoring, not if you are concerned about his breathing. I should have read your op properly Blush

you can snuff babe which you can use from birth. its a gental version of Vicks and they also do an oil baised one that you can also use from birth I got it from boots but can't remember the name. DS had very heavy colds from 6week's, probably due to the time of year and having a big sister.

If it not an actual cold, I'd get him checked by the gp, if he's upset a lot can be a sign of silent reflux.

Sounds familiar! Saline spray helped a little here too, not the drops though, just went everywhere at night.

All I found that really helps was laying him on his side or even his front. As he gets older I feel slightly less guilty about this but otherwise I kept falling asleep with him on me which I think must be worse.

From googling it sounds like they grow out of it but not sure when. Some say 10 or 12 weeks but we're past that I'm afraid :(

Hi, DS was like this when he was tiny. We found the things that helped were putting a wedge under his Moses basket so he slept on a slept on slight angle (also helpful for his colic) and a room humidifier. He was also a winter baby so we had the heating on in the house which dries the air. The humidifier is a bit pricey but you will get years of use out if it for coughs and colds. Sounds like your little one may have cold making him extra sniffly but he should grow out of his regular snuffles soon. Can't remember exactly when DS did but I think it was between two and three months. Apparently it's something to do with very tiny, immature nasal passages.
