Cot bumpers?

Hi everyone

My little girl is 11 weeks on wed and beginning to get too big for her Moses basket. I am wondering how many if you did/didn't use cot bumpers as some say there is a link to SIDS when using them?

Thanks

Sorry no help but marking place as I also want to know..

We didn't put our girl in her crib until 6 months, but we had cot bumper and still do at 21 months. She loves it and sleeps w her head touching it. We never put her against it, but she always moves towards it when she sleeps.

We didn't/don't use cot bumpers and use these instead. Stops them getting legs and arms through the bars and are breathable so very safe.

Don't use bumpers because of the risk. I've never seen the point of them anyway - it doesn't matter a jot if they end up with an arm through the bars.

AnythingNotEverything · 02/12/2013 17:15

This is only anecdotal, but I never had them for DS and he never banged his head or got his arms or legs caught in the bars.

I thought they weren't recommended but can't find anything on The Lullaby Trust site ...

ilovepowerhoop · 02/12/2013 17:23

never used them for either of mine

purrtrillpadpadpad · 02/12/2013 17:23

Thanks for the link Strawberry. DD is always getting a leg stuck through the cot bars and wakes up in distress. Ordering one of those now.

HV told us cot bumpers could cause a heat trap, increasing the risk of SIDS. We've never used them because of this. It just wasn't worth the risk....but that was our decision.

rose1986 · 02/12/2013 17:42

Ok great thanks for all the helpful replies. I'm not going to use them either then as seem pretty pointless and you are right, not worth the risk Smile x

If you research the subject on the Internet you'll find that even the breathable cot wraps are not advised. There have been cases in America involving the breathable bumpers where the baby has died.

We didn't use them, as although the risk is very small, it's still a risk. Ds has a gro bag which usually stops his legs getting stuck.

TrollonlineUK · 05/12/2013 10:51

Using a cot bumper is a decision that can be made by infant parents only. However if a parent decides to have bumper set to avoid getting a leg stuck through the cot bars and wake ups in distress - you can have more information by following this link goo.gl/Be2G6N

I've never used them as I don't see the point of them really, neither of mine ever got limbs stuck in the bars whilst asleep (although they've done it on occassion while they've been in the cot awake and I've been there).

I put both of them in sleeping bags when they were 3 months and that might have helped restrict their movements (mind you, I had lazy lump babies, some babies are pretty active early on).

I just think that waking up in distress with an arm stuck is better than an increased risk of them never waking up at all.

purplemurple1 · 05/12/2013 22:14

We don't have one mil is worried he will get hothead stuck but he isn't mobile yet ans his head can't easily fit through the bars so I don't think it will everbe an issue.

rose1986 · 08/12/2013 22:40

I tried putting DD in her cot for the first time tonight but no success. She usually settles fine around 7-8pm and sleeps through until 7-9am so have resorted to putting her in her Moses basket and that then in the cot to help her get used to it. Apparently it worked for friends so hoping it does for me!

Once I put her I will have her in sleeping bags too so don't think her limbs getting through the bars is a big worry. Mamas and papas sell padding with Velcro to individually go round the bars therefore still allowing the air to flow through so I am quite tempted to buy them

We haven't used cot bumpers for either DC (TBH I'm not sure what they're for, really) but IME the move from Moses basket to cot is much easier if baby is wearing a sleeping bag.

Melonbreath · 09/12/2013 20:04

We used bumpers after dd kept banging her head and she liked sleeping whilst touching them. We did have an airwrap thing but it wasn't padded enough for her nighttime gymnastics.

I took them off when she learnt to stand and cruise and she went mental for nearly a week.
