Ideas for box room?

I live in a 3 bed home and all the bedrooms are pretty small. We have 4 (2boys 2girls) children so 6 of us in total. Hubby and I are in one room roughly the same size as the one the girls are in... Both quite small but managable with clever storage solutions. The boys bedroom is a different story. Its tiny. I have wall storage for toys and one chest of drawers for all the boys clothes. It doesnt even hold half of their clothes. The chest of drawers is in front of the window socant get a higher chest or it will block the window completely. There is nowhere else to put furniture. The bunks take up rest of room. A lot of space gives to the box over stairs. I wish i could have a wardrobe built over stairs but been quoted a grand at least. It would take forwver to save that. My boys have no playing area and its upsetting. I feel such a failure. I bought the house cheap but lost my job and got into debt so cant remortgage or move for a long time yet. Downstairs has just the two rooms living room and kitchen. Jyst any advice on how i may beable to create space for play or clothes storage. Thanks

Is the box open on two sides? Mine in enclosed on three sides and so we put a rail up. Cost less than a tenner (though if there isn't a wall, you can't do that).

Are the bunks high enough to get underbed drawers under them?
Do you have an airing cupboard in the hallway that you could put their clothes in and keep the bedding elsewhere?
Could you hang some clothes on the end of the bunks?
You can't get a higher chest but could you get a slightly longer/deeper one?

Don't feel a failure, you're doing what you can with what you have xx

No two open sides like an L shape so cant do the rail idea. The chest of drawers is the longest i coukd get and no space under bed. I think the onlyvoption is to attempt and build a wardrobe over the bulkhead...

We have no airing cupboard or anything. Bedding n towels in my wardrobe which is crammed. Storage overall a huge problem. We all try to have miminal personal belongings because of it

What are their ages? Could you put one of the boys/girls in with the other two for a while?

Have you thought about a (confy) sofa bed for you and dp downstairs using the box room as your 'walk in wardrobe' so to speak.

*comfy

I will look into the sofa bed idea (it would mean getting rid of our current sofa and buying a new one) I wouldnt mind that at all. If we could give the boys our room they would have lots of room to play.

How about changing the beds? Could you sell yours?
There are some really good bunk beds with storage underneath and on the side.
Is there space in the living room for them to play in?
Do you have a garden that they play in?

Please don't feel a failure.
The kids are fine. They have somewhere safe and warm and are loved. Who knows, if you'd gone for a bigger more expensive house, you may be looking at repossession or moving out in your circumstances which would have been worse.

Could you and dp put a loft bed in the box room so you can have wardrobe and chest of drawers underneath? It'd be 4.6 foot wide rather than presumably the current 3 ft of the bunk beds but maybe doable?
