Outdoor shoes for 9mo walker?

Where is the best place to get shoes for tiny feet? My dd has just started to walk and she loves it! In the house she just wears socks or soft slipper type shoes on the tiled floor but I'd like to get her some shoes she can walk outdoors in too. Trouble is she's only got tiny feet and all the proper shoes I've found are massive on her!

I know they're not supposed to be in shoes til they've been walking for a bit but it's too cold and wet here to not put something on her feet! The leather soles shoes arent really warm enough either and tend to get a bit damp so need something sturdier.

congratulations to your dd! it's so lovely to see them staggering about - they look so excited and pleased with themselves. if she can cross a room or two (10-15 feet) then she is probably getting confident enough to get her down to clarks and see if there is something that will fit her. the softer the sole the better so look at their crawlers and cruisers ranges, they will still have the waterproof sole you are looking for

Although, have u tried that already? What size r her feet?

My dd started walking confidently at about 11 months. We were going on holiday and thought she might like to test her feet so bought shoes probably earlier than we would have done.

We went to an independent shoe shop who said their usual advise was waiting until baby had been walking confidently for a month to six weeks.

Dd initially hated her shoes and cried when they were on. It only took her two or three goes though until she was fine and now she gets excited when she sees them.

She is petite and is only just going into some 9-12 month clothes at a year old so she is wearing size 3 and width F from Start Right.

My early walking DD was fine in Pedipeds. They have a thicker sole than ShooShoo types, but still ultra flexible and soft.

Similar position with 10mo DS but the opposite problem - he had huge feet (5 1/2) so is already out of the cruisers range!

He is currently wearing some slippers (these) from Clarks which are nice and flexible but have waterproof sloes.

I think the recommendation is 6 weeks solid walking before buying as you don't want to damage growing feet that are adapting.

Personally I would just wait and not put her on floor outside atm. After Xmas go and get properly measured and go from there. She would have grown by then also and stand properly flat so they can measure. Pediped or pepino are very good

Artandco, I completely agree with holding off on shoes as long as poss, but op can't just not let her walk outside for weeks! It's so lovely watching them make their first explorations on different surfaces and places.

Artandco · 29/11/2013 07:17

Cup- I agree, but it's really cold anyway atm so they are prob more comfortable in a pram for a while. And they can explore indoor places a while longer

You could get these
www.muddypuddles.com/m/baby/baby-footwear-and-accessories/snowboots

But they are soft soled so wouldn't use on hard path but can use on grass/ snow ( if we get any)

I had a simalar problem, ds walked at 10 months. We have some waterproof padded booties from h+m, they would not be ideal for miles of walking as they are made out of fabric but the occasional little walk is fine. We also have some more shoe type shoes from Polarn och pyret, ds hates them and sits trying to pull them off and crying :(

Thanks for the advice. I realised she might not have such tiny feet after all tho...the size 2 cheapy shoes I bought from mothercare which were massive turned out to have been put on the wrong hanger and were actually a size 4! The actual size 2 don't look quite so massive, although still pretty big!

artandco there is no way she wants to sit in a pram, we are at a grumpy unless I'm walking phase! She did enjoy a potter round the park today in her shoes, she looked very pleased with herself! When she's been walking a bit longer I'll get her measured for proper shoes but at the moment she's just wearing them for a 5min wander in the park from slide to swing-still bare feet at home!

Mine were tiny early walkers. I suggest phone around specialists to see how small they can go; to be honest, I had them basically wear slippers outside if dry & wellies with extra socks if wet, they got thru okay (now smelly teen & preteen).

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 30/11/2013 19:20

My ds walked at 10 months but we didn't buy him proper shoes until he started nursery at a year.

As others have said they recommend you leave it until they've been walking for six weeks and don't get anything hard as you don't want to damage the development of her feet.

Clarks do soft pre walker shoes that are great for newly walking little ones.

By 12 months DS3 had already been walking 3 months. It was February, cold & wet outside, so decided we had to get something more hardy than pre walkers. Start-Rite had nothing small enough so I was referred to the most expensive kids shoe shop (specialist indie etc) in the county to get some extra small size (?Italian?) 2.5-3s. I seem to recall DS1 was walking about 5 months before he finally reached size 3, too.

There used to be someone on MN who loudly slagged off all pre walkers insisting they ruined feet if actually used for walking. But they were fine for mine or months so no regrets.

I heard a decade+ ago about a mainstream shoe company (?Start-rite) making custom shoes for a 7.5month old girl who had been walking 6-8 weeks already.
