  1. Can I use second hand teats for bottles if I sterilise them? I've been given lots.

  2. I know cot bumpers aren't considered safe but how come the lining of moses baskets is ok?

  3. Why is it advised to buy new cot and moses basket mattresses?

  1. No idea. I wouldn't.
  1. Bumpers can come untied and be a strangulation risk. The lining of a moses basket is one piece and can't do the same thing.
  1. It is believed to be a SIDS risk to use a mattress previously used by non-family-member children (and some people would even say siblings).

This webpage has some useful info about what's ok second hand and what isn't.

Madratlady · 24/11/2013 22:44

Thanks. I was intending to replace the teats but dh was asking whether it was really necessary. Mattresses are also being replaced, again I just wondered why.

I thought the bumper thing was to do with risk of suffocation though?

Suffocation too. Babies of moses basket age don't move much though. I'm not an expert- we had a crib.

ExBrightonBell · 24/11/2013 22:56

The bumper thing is to do with suffocation - I would guess they're not as breathable as the lining of a Moses basket? Also they could come untied and cover the face of a small baby.

We used something called AirWrap - it's not a decorative bumper but it stops flailing arms from getting through the cot bars. It's also breathable so not a suffocation risk.

I think you're supposed to replace teats after three months from new because of wear and tear, so I personally would never use second hand. HTH.

christilass · 25/11/2013 10:20

I also use Airwrap its realy good saves worrying .

Dust accumulation in mattress? Becomes softer?

I would not use second hand teats they are so cheap just chuck them much safer. Tiny baby should have safest bottle possible ....

bundaberg · 25/11/2013 18:20

the lining of a moses basket is one piece and the mattress sits on top of it, so there is no way for a baby to get its head underneath it iyswim?

there is research (i believe) which showed a link between re-using mattresses and cot death. I am not sure anyone really knows why though!

Notsoyummymummy1 · 25/11/2013 22:48

Old mattresses where another child has vomited can contain very harmful bacteria that can cause serious throat infections so always get a new mattress.

Bottle teats get used regularly and over time the silicone deteriorates so always best to buy new.

The cot bumpers affect the circulation of air so shouldn't be used with very young babies. Moses Baskets are shallower than cots so don't have the same risk.

princesscupcakemummyb · 27/11/2013 12:27

(1) personally i would not i would buy new

(2) not sure but it must be safe cot bumpers are a risk of suffocation also as the child gets older they can get tangled in them

(3) again its the bacteria its just not worth the risk
