ok, dd is 1 month old today and its our first day of using cloth (have tots bots, sandys, fluffles) have pedal bin with tight lid, laundry mesh and so far have 4 dirty nappies in there that i am not quite sure what to do with !! i am breast feeding so they are colourful but not too wiffy.
I was planning to wash every other day, can i leave them as is in the bin til washtime or will they get stained?
Do I need to prewash them?
advice pretty please!
(p.s. its a great feeling after four weeks of smelly yukky disposables sitting in the heat to start using cloth! took a bit of getting used to bulk wise but she looks kind of cute !)
thanks in advance!

just rinse the poo off, its still dry pailing, fleece linbers are good for ease of rinsing.

mammaemma · 12/07/2006 17:24

thanks misdee and if u r out & about do you normally just rinse when u get home?

thanks too waswondering, take it u don't rinse and that works 4 u?

yes, usually wrap them up in plastic bag, then rinse once home.

i use washable wipes too, (facecloths ) and also chuck them in the same bin as the nappies. do a wash every 2-3days. gotta do one tonight.

alicemama · 12/07/2006 17:27

I do the same, rinse poo off fleece liners and dry pail with a couple drops of tea tree oil
Oh and I wash every other day.

dd2 has been in cloth for 7months and have not one single stain...sunlight when on the line has bleached out any marks

mammaemma · 12/07/2006 17:33

i feel liberated! thank u !
have had such a good day, dd is starting to eat and sleep more regularly, the sun is shining, i made it out the door on time for a walk today and hey we're in cloth ! life is good! he he!

It doesn't stain if you don't rinse either. Any stains do bleach out in the sun (much to my surprise!)

UniSarah · 12/07/2006 19:54

I didn't start rinsing till a week or so ago when the weather got hot.I dry pail ( so called because you don't have a load of liquid in teh bucket to soak the napies in). Now I hold the nappy in teh loo while I flush, not much pooh seems to come off but teh nappy gets nice and soggy, seems to wash off better that way when I shove them in the machine at 40 or 60 with supermarket own brand non bio ( I only use half as much soap as the box surgests).Stains do seem to vanish like magic hung on the line in the sun tho, so don't dispair if you see some orange stains when you take them out the machine.
ps- my boy is now 18wks , in teh 1st mmonth I tried flushing off but the volume of pooh was so small at a time as to be not worth while, now hes bigger and we only have 1 or 2 pooh filled nappies a day its worth it.

JennT · 12/07/2006 21:19

Hmm I am a nappy bore now. DD is 25 weeks and short of holidays and night we are in fabric. We dry pail (because if there is any elastic in the nappy it can perish) by using tea tree or lavender. Sometimes add bicarb too if niffy and weather is hot. Use Ecover powder as you use far less, 60' wash, and a small amount of sanitiser in drawer only.

JennT · 12/07/2006 21:20

Forgot to mention, I rinse only pooey nappies. We only get one a day now anyway, and wash twice a week.

CaptainFlameSparrow · 13/07/2006 14:57

I am similar to JennT - only difference being that I wash with surcare powder, and at 40.

LeahE · 13/07/2006 15:45

If it's bf poo then you may get some stains, but (took me months before someone told me this) sunlight bleaches out bf poo stains really quickly.

LeahE · 13/07/2006 15:46

P.S. I wash either with Fairy non-bio or soap nuts

micegg · 13/07/2006 16:35

i am interested in changing to cloth nappies. When you say you rinse them is this done in the bathroom sink? Not sure about Poo in the sink or am I being over sensitive??

I have been on the nappy lady website and ahve been advised reusable liners. I assume these will need rinsing as well.

Sorry to hijack!

misdee · 13/07/2006 16:42

rinse in the loo.

micegg · 13/07/2006 18:23

arrrrr now I see.

olivia35 · 13/07/2006 21:43

We are 'lucky' enough to have a minute bathroom, so hold nappy over loo & blast vigorously with shower attachment to get poo off.

I then soak in water (bucket in the bath) with tea tree oil. They just go in the wash daily with whatever else is being washed.
