help! the leaks are getting me down

Ds is 16 months and seems to wee for England. Never had any problems with cloth nappies on my dd, but ds is a different story. We seemed to have sorted the night-time nappy (boosted bamboozle and wool wrap, with a Huggle&PUL wrap for when the wool wrap is drying). So the next issue...

Wearing a bamboozle or a totsbots, with a 3-layer fleece-topped booster, and a ME popper wrap - after 2 hours, the nappy is drenched and its soaking through the wrap (not out of the edges, through it). I tried disposables - after 2 hours the crystals are leaking out.

What can I do? If I put any more boosters in he looks like Sumo-man. Dh suggested not giving him anything to drink but this seems excessive...

Help!

nothing should soak through the wrap, maybe you need some new ones?

I have to say my ds is the same. We get on better with hemp nappies like the easy peasy harmony or ella's house or bumsnugglers (from wahmall)

the harmony and ellas house are both pretty slim as well so could easily be boosted with microterry or hemp boosters for more absorbancy.

Unfortunately I think some kids are just heavy wetters. I did read somewhere that you ought to change a baby approx every 1.5-2 hrs anyway. so you may have to resign yourself to it! annoying though I know.

I think it sounds like you need new wraps. Or the next size up.

DS could wee for England and we used ME one size plus 1 booster (2 if we knew we were going to be unable to change him for 3 or more hours) and a popper wrap. It wasn't too thick and it did the job!

(whispers) is he having juice?

DS is usually a medium sort of wetter but two things will have his nappies wringing wet (and I mean that): squash/juice - even the tiniest drop in water and after swimming, when he's swallowed half the pool.

But anyway, new wraps (what a great excuse/reason for shopping), is he in the large ones? I'm glad someone else likes harmony nappies, I thought I was a lone voice in the wilderness, have you tried velour as well, backed with hemp they are very absorbant and dry faster than just hemp too. I've just got a Swaddlebees velour and it's lovely.

Hmm, yes, I've just got a Swaddlebees velour too and its fab (had its first use today). The cut is a bit slender though - like the tanga brief of the nappy world , but it still works brilliantly.

I was getting all excited at the thought of buying new wraps. But if the nappy itself is absolutely full, would the wrap work? Some of my wraps are pretty old, but the one he soaked through this morning wasn't. Well, about a year old, used with 5 other wraps, washed mostly at 40 and line-dried. Should be ok shouldn't it?

They're all size Large, done up on the smallest popper settings, and they seem to fit right.

Yes he has juice and yes he drinks gallons! If I give him water he does one of two things. a) doesn't drink. b) steal's other people's drinks (like dd's). But I can cut down and endure the tantrums .

The main time when we have a problem is in the morning. I change him and then do the school run. If we go on anywhere else (shops, toddler group) then by the time we get anywhere where I can change him, he has wet trousers. I was hoping not to have to fit more nappy changes into the morning routine! And the thought of having to change 2-hourly all day long makes me want to start potty training.

I will go and look up some of these nice nappies you mention.

it is possible that your wraps are just a bit worn. I am sure I heard somewhere about reproofing them but can't remember where.

ds sometimes wakes up with an absolutely sopping nappy, but the wrap still seems to keep it all in.

as far as the juice goes, I had the same problem with ds. got over it in 2 ways.

  1. brita filter. our tape water is manky and the filter does make it much nicer

  2. diluting the juice more and more over a few weeks. I used to measure it in a medicine syringe. started with 10 mls juice per cup, then 2/3 days later went down to 8 and so on. by the time I got down to 2ml per cup he started to refuse it (was probably horrible) and took water instead!

also you could try loosening the wrap a bit. if it's too tight and can squash the nappy and I think the compression makes it less able to soak up a lot of wee quickly

SenoraPostrophe · 12/07/2006 18:20

blimey - that's a lot of wee!

In my experience though a full nappy will leak whatever wrap you have. but how old are your nappies? are they a bit worn out? I recently replaced ds's tots bots and the absorbency of the new ones was a revelation (I don't have many - wash frequently so some of the old ones were a bit threadbare). Plus my friend tells me that tb now do bamboo ones which are supposedly more absorbent? must swap one with her so i can test them...

fruitful · 12/07/2006 18:29

The totsbots are old but the bamboozles are a year old. The leaks are happening when he has been sat in the pram for a while so yes, compression is an issue - but I can't do much about it. I will try making the wraps looser.

I dilute his juice by about 3/4 now. If I try and make it more dilute he'll just drink his sister's - and she is not going to be fooled by any gradual dilution trick!

I think perhaps he is starting to go longer between wees and then just does a huge "power wee".

Dh has just suggested a strategically placed Clippit .
