Worried! Smelly nightime nappies, what can it be?

My dd 14mth has been having very smelly nightime nappies. This seems to have coincided with her going up a size in nappies but still use the same brand. DD does not seem unwell and her daytime nappies are not smelly. I was wondering if any mumsnetter has had a similar experience or if I should take dd to Dr's to see if she has a uti?

unlikely to be a UTI if daytime wees still smell ok

bet the new-size nappies have a different absorbent gel stuff that smells funny if left wet for longer eg overnight.

is she drinking plenty during the day? is it concentrated wee smell?

need some help as to the smell

Do you mean that the nappy you take off her in the morning, that she's had on all night, is smelly?

It might just the fact that some of the wee in it has been there for hours - and it does smell when it's been hanging around for a while, particularly as they get older and wee more heavily.

May just be that with the hot weather she is perspiring more and weeing less so when she does wee it's stronger.

Happened with my DS - he did indeed have a UTI. The night nappy smell threw you across the room when you took it off , but strangely daytime nappies didn't smell half as bad. But he developed other symptoms pretty soon too, so if I should think that if it is a UTI you'll know about it pdq.

Very nasty things UTIs, hope that's not what she has.

Is it ammonia? I noticed this when I first started using cloth. I read somewhere that it was due to not enough rinsing of the nappies so now I only use half a fairy bio tablet and add white malt vinegar to the rinse and they don't smell at all.

Thanks for your help. Sorry I havn't replied sooner but home comp has crashed and I had to wait to come into work!!

I think it may be a combination of change of nappy and hot weather. She is still v. happy and full of beans so have ruled out uti, thank goodness. Thanks for the tip Lucycc I will try and get some more fluid into her during the day.The only way to describe the smell is ...(do not read on if reading this near mealtimes!!) like fried minced lamb, quite sweet but strong?

Thanks again for helpE
