Any co sleepers with toddler and newborn?

Just after some logistical advice, really!

We have 14 month old DS and have co slept from the beginning. Really love it and have no intention of moving DS into his own room until he shows signs he wants to. We're TTCing the next DC and although I don't want to stop co sleeping with DS1 - I'm having slight anxiety about how to arrange things - if - and when DC is born.

Currently DS is in a sidecar cot on my side of the bed. I have two ideas

  • put newborn in that cot and buy a toddler bed to push up against the other side of the bed for DS - so that if he wants his own room earlier, he has a bed.
  • buy a super Kingsize mattress, put newborn in sidecar cot and me, DH and DS on mattress.

Has anyone done it? How have the logistics worked? Has your NB woken your toddler? What happened with the inevitable nappy changes in the middle of the night?

DS has just started sleeping through the night. I know loads of people will think I should move DS but we're really committed to CS and just want advice on how to make it work, really. I tend to over-think things :)

Thanks!

I put toddler dd's bed next to mine and had the baby in with me. I did this when I was still pregnant so dd wouldn't resent the baby and she was fine with it and we were all ok.

Then baby ds came along and we were fine for a few days then ds kept waking dd up and she herself asked to put her bed in her room.
DD has always been a light sleeper though, so your ds might not be disturbed.

Thanks swish! It'd be totally fine if/when DS wants himself to move - we just love it so much, it's been a godsend through the night feeds, and the cuddles are wonderful - I just don't want to move him out just because of a new DC without seeing if we can make it work.

How old was your DD when your DS was born? Right now he's too young to indicate he wants his own space but let's say we've just conceived - I guess he'd be coming up to two years old. Just a few months shy of two years.

I co-slept with a 4yo and a newborn. Super kingsize bed definitely and I slept in the middle (DH in spare room). DD1 slept through all dd2's night feeds, squawking and nappy changing.

Should say they are now 22 months and nearly 6 and they're still here! :)

We had ds (1.5) in the middle some nights and newborn dd in the co sleeper cot, or if ds insisted that he wanted his cot back (which he did occasionally) dd was in the middle. We have a super kingside bed. At 2.8, ds is now in his own bed but is free to come to ours if he wants to. (Most nights he doesn't bother).

DD was a 2and a half when ds was born.
I did try her in her own room when she was one but she hated it and I just didn't want to force her and didn't want to leave her crying herself to sleep as it was no bother for DH and me to have her with us so she stayed.

Thanks everyone!

So do you think we should get a bigger mattress, and then get DS a toddler bed - or single bed depending on when he wants to go! - when he wants his own space?

Excellent going Gwendoline Grin

We did but dc are 10 & 12 now!

Superking size bed was the answer for us! DH worked lots of nights so it was me with a child on each side. Can't remember how they ended up in their own beds so it can't have been too traumatic Grin

We've done exactly that. DD1 won't go in her own room (although weirdly I got cross with her tonight and sent her there and she hasn't reappeared so must have fallen asleep!). A few months ago we bought a single fold up bed and she now sleeps on that right beside my bed. It gives her her own space but I'm still here. Best of all worlds.
