Hi my dd is 8 bedtime is 7pm on school nights, sis has 6 kids some younger than my dd and they go to bed at 8-30, even their 2 year old goes to bed later then my dd, at 2 my dd was in bed at 6:30. i feel a bit sorry for my dd now and am thinking of changing her bedtime to 8pm. What time is bedtime for children in your house? Dd was in bed at 6:30 whe she was 2 because by that time she was tired so i thought it was the norm, now i think im wierd for making dd go to bed so early. So am i wierd? Or is 7pm ok for an 8 year old?

DS14 is 9pm, DD9 is 8:30 and DS7 is 8pm. Add 30mins for weekends.

My dd is almost 9, only lately I'm letting her stay up until 8.30, a little bit later on the weekend

Children need different amounts of sleep. They are not all the same. At this stage you know how much sleep your DD needs, and you know what time she needs to get up in the morning, so you set an appropriate bed time. My dc go to bed later than yours, but they sleep 10 hours (give or take half an hour) even at weekend's. I don't want to get up at 5.30 so I don't send them to bed at 7.30. They wake themselves in the morning, bright and refreshed. I know they are getting the right amount of sleep, so I don't worry about it.

Some nights my ds9 goes to bed at nine because of activities, on the days where he's not out if the house he's asleep by 8.

fanoftheinvisibleman · 15/11/2013 11:31

Just turned 8 and goes to bed between 8.30 and 9pm. To be fair he always has and wakes of his own accord for school in a morning.

Yeah 7pm for 8 year old seems very early!! Lots of children are still out playing in the park during the summer at that time. And 6.30 for a 2 yearl old I do think is quite early-isnt it a bit inconvenient socially? Like on weekends when you see friends/family or go out for dinner? If you have to be in for bed time at 6.30 how do you do anything like that? My LO is 18 months and goes to bed around 8 (later if we go out).

nousernamesleft · 15/11/2013 22:43

Youngest (7) goes upstairs at 7.30 and reads until 8.
Eldest (almost 11) goes up at 8 and reads until between 8.30 and 9, depending on how she feels.

Weekends they get a little extra, but it depends what we're doing and how tired they are.

MrsNormanBates · 16/11/2013 15:37

2 yo goes to bed 7pm weeknights and 7.30pm weekends.

Fairy1303 · 16/11/2013 15:39

DSD has started going to bed at 8/8.30 - we vary it, sometimes she's very tired and it's more like 7.30 but 8 is average.

She's 8.

GiantSnailFeelers · 16/11/2013 15:41

between 7.30 and 8

dd2 and 3 together who are 6 and 8

Ideally I would have dd3 going earlier but after losing their dad they don't like being upstairs alone so this is working for us

baggyoldcow · 16/11/2013 17:21

I'm with SJisontheway. Just because other kids stay up later doesn't mean yours should if she's tired and sleepy by 8 or if you feel that's how she gets a full night's sleep in time for the morning. Mine are younger (eldest is 6) but they're all in bed by 7.30 most nights as they are knackered and frankly it would be cruel to let them stay up later. But other kids I know the same age stay up till 8.30 or 9 ! Why not have a trial week where you let her stay up an extra 15 - 30 minutes and see how it goes?

ilovepowerhoop · 16/11/2013 17:23

ds is 7 and goes to bed at 8pm school nights
dd is 10 and goes to bed at 8.30pm school nights

They get an hour extra at weekends

CMOTDibbler · 16/11/2013 17:25

my yr3 ds (will be 8 in May) goes up to bed at 7, asleep at 7.30. And he needs that

Pancakeflipper · 16/11/2013 17:25

My 8yr old might go to bed before 8pm but can read until 8.30pm if they wish.

Friday and Saturday often 9pm.

Due to activities in evening there's a 8.45pm night too.
He is sensible about bedtime and wakes up at 7am every morning.

Feenie · 16/11/2013 17:25

Ds is 8 next month - he is in bed for 8 on a school night, half past 8 on weekends. He gets up at 6.30 every day the loon.

Weegiemum · 16/11/2013 17:25

My dd1 is 14, school night bedtime (lights out) is 9.30
Ds is 11 - 9pm
Dd2 is 9 - 8.30.

Add about 45-60 mins at weekend.

lorisparkle · 16/11/2013 19:16

it is not just when they go to bed but when they have to get up. ds1 is 7 and lights out is 8pm when organised. we need to be up at about 6.30am so ds3 who is 3 really should be in bed by 6.30pm as he is grumpy without has 12hrs and does not have a nap. i do believe that many behavioural problems and difficulties concentrating are sleep related so if your dc is happy with an early night then i would stick with it. i wish i could get mine into bed earlier but with activities and homework it is not easy.

itscockyfoxagain · 16/11/2013 19:22

When DS turned 7 his bedtime moved from 7 to 7:30pm. DD is 4 next week and goes at 7pm. DD goes straight to sleep DS is usually still awake at 8.
