Carrier recommendations for a 22lb toddler?

Hi there

I loved using my structured mothercare carrier when DD was little, to avoid taking prams etc, but she's just too heavy to go on my front now. I've been using a hipseat, but would really like something I could walk a long way with.

What worked for you?

Thanks

DD was that weight at 22 weeks and lived in the ergo well into toddlerhood. DS had to give up the ergo at about 15 months as it seriously hurt my back and neck. Never fathomed why. He's 26 months and about 35lbs and if I carry him it's in a wrap on my back.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 13/11/2013 11:52

DS was a chunky one and I used the Ergo as SOH says until toddlerhood (stopped when about 5m pg).

DD was skinnier and I have only just passed on the Ergo to a friend (DD was still having the odd sling ride at the age of 4yrs)

Dd2 is 22lb now and I have a Little Life back carrier which I bought from John Lewis (around £80). I have the lightweight one that doesn't have a storage pocket under it, as I wanted something that would take up little space in the boot of the car. I totally recommend it, it is really comfortable with good padded straps and I can adjust it so I am taking all of her weight on my hips and am not straining my back or shoulders. She enjoys it too and is very happy going for long walks in the woods where we live.

That's really useful - did you find the front strap on the Ergo bothersome?
I keep reading reviews saying it goes over your neck, or doesn't do up over a large bust (that'd be me then...)

Also, has anyone tried the Manduca carrier? it seems similar to Ergo but with a few improvements?

I'm large of bust and found I could adjust the straps as needed (however I am narrow across back/shoulders).

MummyWeatherwax · 13/11/2013 14:54

That's useful to know, thanks

i have a beco butterfly to carry my dd who is about 22lbs. i love it. it's a bit like the ergo but you don't have to shuffle them round to the back iyswim. they can be strapped in then the carrier put on your back like a back pack, but it's still a soft carrier. it does have a strap across the chest but it's adjustable - can't vouch for whether it works with big boobs, sadly!

"DD was that weight at 22 weeks"

DD didn't even weigh 20lb at a year old.

Helspopje · 13/11/2013 15:07

babyhawk toddlerhawk meitai

DD was a remarkably chubby baby bunbaker. She was 25lbs at 25 weeks and still bfed which meant many people made many hilarious references to gold top milk. She's 6 now, v tall and whippet thin. She wears 9-10 clothes for length as her 7-8 pinafores were indecent but she has to wear dresses as skirts won't stay up. I have to take everything in. It's a right pain. AFAIK, she weighs around 52lbs now so has only doubled her weight since 6 months. Between 12 and 24 months she gained almost nothing in weight, but shot up in height.

chocoreturns · 13/11/2013 18:00

ergo vote here. I have a large bust and no problems. Was carrying my 75th centile 3.5yo in it at Peppa Pig world! Def recommend it. My 16mo DS also loves it.

PurplePidjin · 13/11/2013 18:07

Www.slingmeet.co.uk and try a few till you find what fits!

BarberryRicePud · 13/11/2013 18:40

DD is 6m and 21lb. I started with my old beco butterfly which i used for ds and loved. I now use a manduca and have found it to be much more supportive, and i didn't think that would be possible!

I've only used front carry so far with crossed back straps, but you can back and hip carry with them.

Top class sling IMHO. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

LedaOfSparta · 13/11/2013 19:04

Sleepy Nico carriers are nice. If you're on Facebook there is a group called Slings and Things FSOT which has various sorts preloved.

MummyWeatherwax · 13/11/2013 19:46

Thanks everyone, lots of useful advice. I think I'll try to get to a meet and try before I buy

Hey OP sorry to hijack but I am looking for the same thing as you. Like the sound of the Beco Butterfly where you can just put the baby on your back like a rucksack, but had a look at the Beco website and it seems like the only sell a Soleil and and Gemini...no sign of a butterfly :-( can anyone shed any light on which one is best?

ViviDeBeauvoir · 13/11/2013 20:34

My DS2 is 30lbs at 10 months and I carry him no problem in a boba 3G.

u32ng · 13/11/2013 21:22

Hi! I have a Manduka!

And my DS is 9 months and I'm guessing about 23/24lbs now so not exactly light! I still front carry and it feels pretty sturdy and a lot of the support comes from the waist belt I think. I've not carried him in it for more than an hr since August when he was a bit lighter and i had him in it (and asleep) for a few hours. I really need to work out how to use it for side carry, but the last time I tried it I'm not sure I adjusted the straps properly as I felt like DS was going to fall out.

Would back-carry with it but cannot figure out how I'm supposed to get him on my back??!

fempsych · 13/11/2013 21:26

You tube and sling meets are your friend for learning back carries! Takes practise but you can then carry babies for ages!! I love my manduca but now also wrap with a woven

MummyWeatherwax · 14/11/2013 16:16

So I went to try some carriers today, with varying success.
For carrying on my back, the manduca didn't work - I could only get it on with help, as DD was not cooperating.
The baby Bjorn One was doable alone, but seriously squished the boobs!
Stokke didn't have enough padding, so dug in on the hips & shoulders.

Back to the drawing board! I'm going to try a wrap style if I can find it. Smile

See if you can try a boba 3G - my boobs are huge (32J) but I haven't had any problems.

Helspopje · 14/11/2013 20:15

monster BF norks here (28L)
a non-clippy carrier may suit better hence the meitai style
