Would this be taking us on a huge step backward???

We've off on holiday to Zimbabwe for 2 weeks at the end August.

DS1 (who'll be 6 in September) has been out of nappies at night for about 4 weeks, last week we had our first dry nights - 4 of them. And the 2 wet nights we've just had have only been one wee - as opposed to being absoluted saturated up to 1 week ago.

DS2 has been without nappies (and clothes on the bottom half) at home when awake for about 4 weeks now - very good at getting them in the potty.

Would we be making a huge problem for ourselves if we put DS1 back in nappies at night for 2 weeks and DS2 in nappies full time again for 2 weeks - or would we, with a little coaxing be able to get back into the routine???

I think you should be really brave and carry on with what you're doing while on holiday. There's a few weeks to go before you travel and ds1 and ds2 should be really getting the hang of it by then - would be a shame to go backwards.

I'm just concerned about the washing aspect - we're going to be staying with DH's relatives and don't really want to burden them with all the extra washing.

i would carry on as you are personally. But i would also pack a few pull ups and nappies just in case. Can u take a mattress protector too for nights?
Have never been to Zimbabwe but assuming u could always take ur washing to launderette if there are masses?

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:37

We don't even know if the boys will be sleeping on beds - or on mattresses on the floor yet. And DS1 has a wonderful knack of soaking the top sheets (and usually pillow cases too) when he wees at night.

I lived there for 2 1/2yrs and I don't ever recall seeing a laundrette - and if they did exiist back then I doubt they do now as no-one could afford them [frown]

I think you should carry on too, if you can - at this stage I think it would be a real step backwards for them. It might knock ds1's confidence backwards if he thinks you don't trust him to be dry at night, and you could find that all your progress so far is lost.

Could you have a word with dh's relatives and let them know that there could be a little extra washing? I'm sure they won't mind at all.

Nice to see you back again, btw

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:40

The thing is it's hand washing - washing machines are a very rare luxury out there and the prospect of them not only having to put us up and feed us (although we'd help out financially for them) and do the extra washing seems a lot to ask.

DS2 is still barebummed at the moment - we haven't progressed to the 'wearing clothes but no nappy' stage - and I'm not sure he's going to be ready for 6 weeks time - which means we'll probably end up with several changes of clothes for him a day.

arghhhh

I agree keep them out of nappies and take mattress protector for night and maybe a few spares for long journeys with no access to toilets.

MerlinsBeard · 10/07/2006 12:44

sorry for my ignorance HRH. maybe stop training ur DS2 until u come back then? ie put him back in nappies/pull ups and tell him why (if he can understand)

Can u put ur DS1 to sleep in a plastic bag to stop him wetting teh sheets sorry, nothing practical i can suggest there but agree it may knock his confidence if u go back a step.

Hand washing a 'mare at best of times, never mind when its someones elses childs wee!

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:46

"few spares for long journeys with no access to toilets."

LOL - made me grin - there'll be plenty of those - 300 miles from Bulawayo to Vic Falls - there used to be a "halfway" hotel about 150 miles up the road - but we think it may have closed - just lots of 'bush' to wee in

yeah same in Kenya!

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:48

I think DS2 would be ok with it - I'm being really lazy with his training - 4 weeks on and we still haven't ventured out without a nappy on - but when he gets in and it's taken off he uses the potty without being reminded.

I like the plastic bag idea - would keep the mosquitoes off him too .

Personally I think I would regress a little for the sake of convenience - but it's up to you whether you can face starting again when you get back. I think it's quite a lot of pressure on both of them, knowing you expect them to manage to be dry, in a new situation. Might be kinder all round to abandon for the time being.

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:53

thank FaZ - just read your potty training thread - sounds like your taking the same attitude as me with DS2 - "whenever, whatever, can't be arsed faffing outside yet" LOL.

Yes, the technical term is "The Lazy F*cker Technique" I think QOQ

welshmum · 10/07/2006 12:58

Now you've said a bit more about the logistics I'm feeling a bit less gung ho. If ds 1 is still doing well could you take those Care Mat things for him? Don't know what I'd do about ds2....

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 10/07/2006 12:59

lol FaZ - I've been up here about 1/2hr just gone downstairs and found that DS2 got himself down from the table and did a wee and poo in the potty on his own.....

I really should start thinking about him wearing clothes without a nappy in the house - but can't be bothered.

I would go back to night-time pull-ups for ds1, you can explain why. Unless he has a massive breakthrough (ie a couple of weeks of dry nights) in the meantime.
We did this quite a lot with DS1 - started then stopped as it wasn't getting anywhere. I know HVs tell you not to , but sometimes it's just too much of a mare.
