Best vest-type things for newborns?

Just that really! I know I read a thread somewhere on MN about 'best' things for babies, and I can't remember the vest/ singlet brands mentioned, which from memory were miraculous, cheap, comfortable, durable etc... Any suggestions appreciated!

IME any envelope-neck vests are ok, but I actually don't put newborns in vests because they HATE having things put over their heads. Especially with the colder weather it's easier to just put them in two sleepsuits.

tiredteddy · 12/11/2013 18:48

I liked the style they do in a H&M where the vest has a cross over front panels that popper up. Ballet cardigan style if that makes sense. Easier to put on a tiny baby as you can lay them out flat place baby on open vest then do it up rather than putting over the wobbly little head.

Waste of money, cause I'm to hot whinging and grump. DDs toys wore her baby vests more than she did (despite her being born in mid winter)

Great info, thanks all! It looks as though we won't be doing vests then. It makes sense. Shall pop into H&M and check out their crossover tops...

Depends when dc is due. Mine was Nov baby so needed the extra layer for warmth. I didn't find getting vests on a problem tbh just got multipacks from Mothercare or Asda. Got through loads of them. I only dressed ds in vests and sleepsuits till he was 3 mths old, no outfits cos those are tricky to put on and totally pointless when you are changing them 6 times a day....

sillyoldfool · 13/11/2013 08:41

You don't have to put envelope necked vests over their wobbly heads, you can pull them up from te bottom, that's the point of the envelope neck.
I've always put mine in vest+sleep suit for the first 3 months or so.

SpookedMackerel · 13/11/2013 08:41

Ialwas put my newborns in vests and never had a problem putting them over their heads. I preferred h and m ones as well, but I also had lots of multi pack ones from supermarkets and m&s. I don't really like envelope necks, prefer poppers or crossover ones.
Dd still wears them now it is wintry weather again, and she is two!

Stepmooster · 13/11/2013 08:52

I like vests for my 2 11wo and 17mo. I like the fact that the poppers stop the vest riding up unlike ordinary tops, which seems to be inevitable when getting them in slings, buggies and car seats.

I am not that bothered on the style but I started to pay a bit more for them when I found out I was pregnant again so that they could get a second airing. some of the supermarket clothes don't seem to last as hand me downs IMO. But then DC1 was a prolific pooper and we had to do a lot of wardrobe changes and they got washed a lot at high temperatures.

TickledOnion · 13/11/2013 09:09

My 2 wore envelope vests day and night until about age 2 so I think they are pretty essential. I only know one baby who didn't as he was a very hot child, but most people I know just bought supermarket brand vests. They lasted through 2 DDs and the envelope means you can pull them down over their bodies if their nappy had exploded. They help keep a nappy on and tummies warm.

PicnicPie · 13/11/2013 10:28

Another fan of envelope vests. Great for when DD has had a big poop explosion and I need to whip it off by pulling down over her body than over her head. Have bought from Mothercare, Next and Sainsburys. All good quality cotton that washes well. I like them and neve dress DD without. Like that they cover her back when she's being picked up and moved from here to there. Find it weird to see a baby without one really.

Thurlow · 13/11/2013 14:34

I had quite a hot baby but even then she wanted a vest and a babygrow in winter, and as they get older vests are great under clothes when they are crawling etc and their clothes get all caught up.

The Next ones do seem to wash well and pretty thick and we use them now we seem to have passed the poo-explosion stage, but Asda ones are also amazing value for money if you might end up throwing them out because they are too dirty.

ZuleikaD · 13/11/2013 16:41

Two sleepsuits works really well.

showtunesgirl · 13/11/2013 16:42

I have found the best value ones to be the ones from George Asda. They are soft and wash extremely well.

JollySeriousGiant · 13/11/2013 16:44

We've got some lovely soft Markies ones for DD. She was born in August. 2.5 yo ds is still in vests with pops to keep his nappy in place.

This time around I've discovered my dislike of vests with short sleeves. Long sleeves are good for under tops or ones with no sleeves. The short sleeved ones just annoy me.

1charlie1 · 14/11/2013 08:06

Thanks for all the ideas! Am looking forward to going around and having a browse, now that I know a it more about what it is I'm looking for! Can I just clarify that the 'poppers' that everyone is talking about are the stud things that do up around the nappy area? So in other words, they are in one piece?

Six of these and six of the ones with the long legs to go.over.

Done.

pudseypie · 14/11/2013 11:15

Yes OP they are the poppers.

Just out interest isn't it more convenient to use the vests that don't cover the nappy area so they don't get any nappy leakage on them? Don't they last longer that way? I'm a mum to be and these are the ones I've bought.

JollySeriousGiant · 14/11/2013 13:51

The ones without poppers between the legs ride up. They take about half a second to unpop and about 5 seconds to do up again, once you're into the swing of things, so they're not really any more time consuming. I prefer the ones with poppers as they hold the nappy in better. And if the nappy leaks the vest often catches the leakage meaning I don't have to change baby's trousers/sleep suit.

redcarrot1 · 14/11/2013 14:03

Ok, thanks Jolly! I guess I'll have to wait until baby is bigger (or born first!) and then I can justify buying popper ones.

ZuleikaD · 14/11/2013 14:08

You can get basically new-and-unused baby clothes on ebay for a fraction of the price.

TarkaTheOtter · 14/11/2013 14:16

Every mum I know uses vests with poppers under the bum. They help hold nappy in place and keep tummy warm when other clothes ride up. Dd is 21 months and has worn one every day and night under clothes/pyjamas. In very hot weather she JUST wore a vest.
Tesco ones are chela and do the job. They don't really need to be long lasting as they are only in each size for a short time.

1charlie1 · 14/11/2013 18:04

Thank you for the link, Mortified. And thanks for the clarification, pudseypie. I'm going to do a little online shop tonight, so I've got a bit of a list worked out now. Thank you all!

The trousers with the feet in were well used in our house, too. Save on having to buy tiny socks
