Tips needed to relieve 3 year old's night time awful cough

HI, My three year old is coughing so much she's struggling to catch her breath and there are moments when I think she'll be sick. So far I've given her a little ventolin, raised her to more of a sitting position - though of course she keeps sliding back down. Its a really thick chesty cough - would hot water and a vapour rub help?

I'm sure there's an old Mumsnet tip about rubbing Vicks on the feet.

My mother swears by Vicks on the feet! Wink

We have this with ds. I do give him karvol in chest (and feet) but find the best thing is olbas oil. I put it in very water in a bowl and leave it in his room to steam. Seems to be most effective.

Also. Reduce dairy for a day or two can help.

Sorry, that should be very hot water. I use. Bowl with a narrow opening ( more a small case) so it doesn't cool down too fast.

We got the calpol plug in thing. I thought it was a gimmick but after 3 nights of coughing DD aged 3 slept for 14 hours which is unheard of - ill or well.

My DD had croup by the way . If she can't breathe you do need to call the doctor.

OP hope your daughter is ok and doc has seen her/things have improved.

DS1 struggles with bad coughs - has been hospitalised twice - and now we find a humidifier helps a lot at night.
