I always found that nappy rash was much worse if a nappy wasn't changed immediately it became wet/dirty eg if wet at the beginning of a nap, and not changed until they woke up.
Also very clear link to teething. Rash was always really bad when teeth were coming through.

killpeppa · 05/11/2013 12:30

you could try another brand- Tesco are great.

previous poster is right teething makes it bad but also a high intake if fruit as the acid in the fruit affects the acidity of the urine.
so maybe try to cut down fruit intake or avoid more citrusy fruit eg oranges

The yellow cream is amazing. The name escapes me.

Surely if it was an allergy to the nappies, which you always use, the nappy rash wouldn't go away?

AnythingNotEverything · 05/11/2013 12:40

Different creams do different things. Creams like sudocreme and bepanthen are a treatment, whereas creams like castor oil are barriers. Using a different cream may help.

When you have a good, clear period, you could switch to a barrier cream as a preventative measure.

Nappy off time is good, as is changing more regularly.

Is LO's skin sensitive in other ways?

precious2 · 05/11/2013 13:55

Ive tried so many diffrent creams atm im using metanium its a yellow cream which is sorting it out. But ive been through that many creams nothing gets rid of it properly im costant changing his nappies half of them a still dry as I change so often sk thats what give me the idea to change nappy brand and no anythingnotanything no I dont think hes got sensitive skin as hes fine with bubble baths and things. And thanks for the replys

Newbie here, just a thought: if they're still dry when you change them perhaps they don't need changing?

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 05/11/2013 16:56

Maybe you're aggravating his skin by changing the nappies more than you need to, and by wiping his skin?

You only need to change them when they've poo'd, as it irritates the skin, or if the nappy is soaking. I don't change my DS every time he has a wee.

Only apply metanium in a thin layer, you don't need a lot. Try removing it with olive oil instead of wipes.

I only apply cream if I need to, if his skin is clear I don't put anything on. Teething definitely makes nappy rash worse.

OddFrog · 05/11/2013 17:06

Metanuim worked for us, but just the lightest smear or it seems to coat the nappy and prevent full absorption. Also, do try other nappy brands, supermarket own brands are about as good as pampers IMHO, but when DS had nasty rash we switched to Naty for a while, I found them less chemically. How old is you DS? Could it be a change in food? When we were weaning the rash was worse on certain foods e.g. Anything orangy; satsumas, etc were awful. Later, when I first gave him juice, all the 'no added sugar' ones affected him badly. Just a though...

Poor wee mite, it does look sore, doesn't it? I occasionally gave DS an oatmeal bath to soothe his bum if he flared up (despite nappy-free time, quick management, dietary monitoring, it happened so fast). I tied a large handful of oats in a muslin and let him play with the 'octopus' in a warm bath. It was fun if nothing else.

Tigresswoods · 05/11/2013 19:48

Yes that's the one. It worked wonders on DS when he was at the height of his nappy rash.

FrogGreen · 05/11/2013 20:11

yy to oatmeal bath, works beautifully

with ds1 I had some confusing nappy rashes, couldn't figure out the cause, eventually figured out by accident that he was sensitive to castor oil, which supposedly hardly anyone is allergic to so it's in a lot of baby lotions and nappy creams...

never heard of a lo being allergic to the actual nappies

Teaandflapjacks · 05/11/2013 22:33

I really would also change nappy brands - I have avoided pampers like the plague as they are very heavy on chemicals - just google 'pampers skin reaction' etc you will see what i mean. They are really not great IMO. I just use basic ones from supermarket own etc and find them much better - now obviously they don't soak up as much (my friend raves about papmers as she leaves her son in his for 14 hours at a time overnight - I don't do that), but then i change them as soon as wet during day and she is max 10-11 hours overnight and so far so good. good luck

precious2 · 06/11/2013 08:42

I no that I dont need to change them when not wet but I tried to changed it more often to see if it made a difdrence and it didnt

I tried changing my wipes to wet cotton wool balls but it didnt seem to make a change but ive been putting metanium on in small amounts aand so far great ive also changed to asda little angels so ill see how these go

I dont think hes teething as hes 23 months and got his teeth in quick unless its a back one that I cant see..

Ill try oatmeal bath and see how that goes too:)

And teaandflapjacks I know what you mean about pampers how they say they last 12 hours of drieness I dont agree as when younger there weres always leekages down the leggs if he slept through but now hes older he wakes more so I change them when wet.
Ive changed brand to asda little angles so hopefully it will all go soon.

Thanks everyone :)

We found the orange Pampers much better than the normal green packs. The green ones leak. Plus the orange packs are cheaper.

Aldi nappies are meant to be good and Morrisons own are fab. The worst I tried were Huggies (which you can't get now anyway) and Boots own, they leaked terribly.

NewJewels · 06/11/2013 16:51

What are you wiping him with when you change?

My LO had 'the yellow stuff' for a while to clear up some rash but since switching to cotton wool & olive oil (sunflower is recommended too) for wiping and having plenty of nappy-free time we don't need any creams at all.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 06/11/2013 16:56

I always...put a layer of sudocream on at every nappy change

That there is your issue and you need to stop it.

When you are putting cream on you are preventing the nappy from doing its job and absorbing the wee. So when he does a wee it will make the cream wet and his skin will stay wet for longer.

Handbagsonnhold · 06/11/2013 17:01

Agree with Wanabee....when I had dd I thought you just had to use it....my hv said "why bother buying Pampers no point if you are going to use cream every change ....just buy cheap nappies" I never used cream. Wiped with cotton wool and water. Dd never had a nappy rash. Sounds old fashioned I know. Hope you sort it .
