Anyone have or had a baby as young as 14 months with a shocking temper?

My 14 mnth old DS has the worst temper I have ever seen in a baby so young.

He has a 3 yr old sister and 6 yr old brother who I could not describe as bad tempered at all. They do have spats together and my DD's voice can be shrieky but nothing to explain this.
They both adore their baby brother and he adores them.
Neither my DH or I have bad tempers and we get on well. DH helps out in the mornings and evenings so he see's him a lot and Im a stay at home mum.
As he is so grumpy I rarley take him out apart from the school and nursery runs as it means he can have his two naps in his cot - to take the edge off him.

I should say he is very sociable and very affectionate. He is described as a smiley boy by anyone who meets him.

Oh My God he has some temper. Head banging, biting, hiting, lashing out etc. He just turns puce if we try and take something off him he shouldn't have and just about explodes. He even punches his own head!!

Anyone else got one of these?!! What do I do?

Is he frustrated re speech? Maybe teach him some signs? Also give him warning before you take something away or get him to put it away. My dd will happily turn off the tv for example but gets cross if I do it to stop peppa.

Wouldn't it be good for him to get out and do things? Maybe let him nap in buggy in the morning so you can take him to a playgroup and wear him out ...

I agree at 14 months mine would have gone bonkers if they had Been at home all day - need park / playgroup / proper stimulation

Thanks for swift reply's. He doesn't walk yet (probably part of his frustration). He NEVER naps in a buggy or car (v strange)!
He will just cry constantly.
I have taken him to our local toddler group twice and a music class once and I was just bedraggled with his constant crying. I suppose I should try again but it put me off!

He loved a soft play we took him to last week but it's an hour from here so can't be a regular thing with the other two at school and nursery.

I have put it down to frustration and yes you are right turnip good point. I should try to stop myself even thinking he is bad tempered but I suppose im just worried im going to have one of those nightmare little boys who go around hitting everyone!
My eldest DS was always a gentle little boy and my DD was gentle too. I used to watch little horrors in playgroups and thank the lord i didn't have one of those - karma?!!

If he's a cryer - wondered if reflux or something could be an issue.

waterrat · 04/11/2013 20:46

Oh gosh sounds very tiring - I bet his mood will lift once he can walk - it must be frustrating for him

I would look at physical possibilities - tummy trouble ? Hearing problems ?

princesspants · 04/11/2013 20:48

steamwisher yes he has reflux. All 3 of mine did (lucky me)!
They all had the same medication for the first year. I can tell what the symptoms of reflux are by now and it isn't that. There is no refluxing issues at all. We have started to ween him off the meds and it is going well.

my ds was a bit like this. he would hit himself and bang his head on the floor if I did anything he didn't like. he has grown out of it but is still highly strung.

princesspants · 04/11/2013 20:56

waterrat hmm, it does make me wonder though - is there more to him than just grumpiness?
The reflux was diagnosed and medicated very early on. Like 5 weeks old. Once the meds began to work the feeding issues got better and the crying subsided - but neither disappeared.
He was famous for being 'the crying baby' at school drop off and my local shops! Comments like "oh, we heard him before we seen him"!
He continued to be a windy nightmare to feed. I breast fed him and during each feed Id have to stop 5/6 times to wind him - this went on until he was 8 months and I couldn't take it anymore.
Switched to bottles and the weird wind thing stopped.
By 9 months he finally slept through and he seemed so much better in himself that I just put it all behind me.
I suppose in hindsight though he still cry's a lot for not very much.
Infact - he is bloody hard work and I don't know how I have pulled this year off!! Ha. Mumsnet has the knack of making you think outside the bubble you are normally stuck in.
I wonder what else could be wrong then?

I do I do! My 13 month old Boy has started to cry. . . all day. I had too much Wine tonight because he drove me up the wall. He is usually a mellow happy child so I think he is frustrated because he wants to walk. Nothing to do with not taking him out for the day to playgroups e.t.c as he goes to Nursery 2 days a week and has stimulating weekends with the family. He loves 2 naps per day if he gets them.

The temper of my Son is because he wants to walk/run!! I think it must be the same for your DS. My DS pulled my Hair, slapped my Face & almost ruined my Nose today. He now has a filthy temper but he hasnt always been like this. He was/is a smiley happy Boy.

Im holding his hands and walking with him for most of the day (which gives me back ache). I think your Sons mood will lift once he can walk. Although with 2 older DC's walking with him must be almost impossible? If he learns to walk and has the same temper I would ignore.

My youngest sister was like this (child number 3). She grew out of it. She is hyper intelligent, and in retrospect all the family think it was frustration at not being able to do everything my other sister and I could do. She got better when she spent more time with children her age.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 04/11/2013 21:18

My DD is 15mo and although I would say she is generally very good natured and a happy, smiley and affectionate little girl, just over the past few days I've been seeing a bit of a temper emerging.

She head bangs - on furniture, on the floor, on us - , and punches her head, and if she wants something or we take something off her, she really screams the house down! No hitting or biting yet, although she's started pushing her brother (5) away and really squirming if he tries to cuddle her. Her speech/vocab is excellent for her age and she pretty good at signing so she is able to communicate pretty well for a 15mo, and she's walking so I don't feel like she overly frustrated at the moment...but it's definitely worse when she's tired or hungry or if I'm not giving her enough attention.

At the moment, I've been kind of able to get her to snap out of it quite quickly with a bit of distraction, but I do feel like she's giving me a sneak preview of the horror that will be her terrible 2s!

GetYourSocksOff · 04/11/2013 21:21

Yep, I do. DDs tantrums began when she was 8 months old. (8 months. Seriously, I had no idea).

It's almost always frustration here. I can stop about 50% immediately now by saying 'show me. Show me what you want' and she does. She's 17 months and understands and communicates a huge amount, but sometimes I forget how much because she doesn't use many words.

Sometimes it's just tough, because it's dangerous, or because she has to let me go to the loo sometime, or because sometimes I just NEED her to go in the pushchair (and a hundred other things) and we just have to sit those out and distract as much as possible! Seeing her older brother do things she can't drives her crazy.

Tiredness, hunger or pain obv make things worse.

I sympathise!

CoffeeChocolateWine · 04/11/2013 21:23

it was frustration at not being able to do everything my other sister and I could do

Totally agree with this...I think this is a big part of my DD's temper at the moment.
