Do your kids have too many toys??

I'm just curious about this. I hate clutter and stuff lying all over the place thus my kids toys are kept upstairs and I bring a box at a time down. They don't seem any more bored or different from kids whose houses are strewn with so many different toys all over the place. Reason I'm curious is that I'm concsious when DD's wee pals come to our house it looks kind of empty and boring whilst the other kid's houses look exciting but the kids play in exactly the same way and no matter how many or how few toys there are, they always play with what is there for just a few minutes before going on to wreck drag the next toy out!

I never had loads and loads of toys when I was a kid but was very inventive about playing games.

Curious to others' views.

Far far far too many.

really need to send some to the charity shop.

i always think my house looks boring for other kiddies, in fact i know it does!
my kids hardly seem to play with their toys, they are either outside, on x box or pc etc
so, yes, i have really decluttered. if stuff is left un touched for too long then it gets put on e-bay.
ds2 said the other day that he only likes toys that are new lol
my house is fairly minimal, i like it that way.

My kids do have far too many toys and they are mainly in our living room. I have taken to buying really rubbishy plastic toys from cheapo shops as these seem to keep the dss occuppied for hours and it makes no difference to them where they're from. They do tend to play with all their toys so I don't mind them cluttering up the place that much.

Way too many and because they are always there they lose their appeal. However, if something has been hiding under the bed for a few months and then brought out, it gets days and days of play as if it's xmas!

Def need to do a charity shop clear out.

I think tons too many. I've decided since dd turns 6 soon not to get any more toys. Really don't think she needs them

Yes - definitely too many, though not all very expensive. Have found a good way of keeping the living room clear of toys though - we had a new sofa and chair delivered last week, and the old one's blocking the toybox, because we haven't managed to get rid of it yet. They can't get to the toys.

I'm with you Pagan. I think too much stuff just confuses them. I think if you put things away in boxes and change them around daily they often have more fun.
However, now DS is older, have had the scenerio of other children empting out every box (Lego/playmobil -lots of tiny bits) and leaving it all mixed up all over the floor. GGrrrrr!
Interestingly DS doesn't do this
Although I do have to nag him to tidy up, he seems to like everything in it's place.

I'm with you saadia, I'm always buying stuff from carboots for 50p and a £1 a go. on't feel so bad chucking them away after a few months. Most things are a 5 minute wonder - most of my dd's favorite toys have been from carboots, cheapie shops etc.
The ones we've paid a fortune for have made little impact - she is only 3, I suppose when she's older it'll all change with peer pressure to have the newest & best toys/gadgets

KBear · 07/07/2006 12:07

DD is 7 and seems to be overrun with notepads of every description which in itself isn't the end of the world but she has about 50!!! They're her favourite thing.

DS is 4 and possesses more toy vehicles than Matchbox ever did! They range from cheap tat ones to more expensive Tonka ones but he loves each and everyone dearly and remembers them all. He'll grow out of them soon enough so I'm happy to have two boxfuls on the landing for him to rummage through!

Dreading the next birthday though - going to spread the word that books is the "in" present"!
